Library

Library and English staff are now recruiting students from Years 9 and 10 for this year’s Make A Book In A Day (MABIAD) activity. We are calling any students who enjoy creative writing – why not join up to write a collaborative story – either as a team of 4-5 students or individually (to be put in a team) in MABIAD? Each team also needs an illustrator. This is a BHS activity and is not a competition
If you are interested in finding out more, come and see Ms McCarthy or Ms Winfield in the library this week.
The library’s Multicultural Day display was very popular. Staff and students were invited to place a pin on the world map(s) to show where their family originates. By the end of the second week, the display showed that over 35 countries are represented at Belmont High School, which is very exciting!
It’s not too late to sign up for the Premier’s Reading Challenge! The Challenge is open to students in Years 7 to 10, and those who sign-up are required to read at least 15 books by early September. Students who complete the Challenge are given a pizza lunch and go into a draw to win a Dymocks gift voucher. See a library staff member for more information!
We have a lot of exciting new books in the library about a wide range of subjects, including trains, Mr Beast, Zendaya, cars, NFL and other sports, graphic novels, and lots of new general fiction. We also have a variety of magazines available on subjects such as skateboarding, surfing, art, science, and modern pop.
Most fiction and non-fiction (information) books can be borrowed for up to 3 weeks, while graphic novels and magazines can be borrowed for 1 week.
Book of the Week
20,000 Leagues under the Sea
by Jules Verne
Ships across the globe are being attacked by a mysterious creature! World governments are sending out search parties to find the hidden menace and kill it before any more damage is done.
Professor Arronax, his servant, Conseil, and sailor Ned Land are part of an expedition when they are swept overboard and lose their ship. They are rescued by the Nautilus, a strange submarine-like ship that suddenly appears from beneath the waves, and become the ‘guests’ of its skipper, Captain Nemo, and told they can never leave…
20,000 leagues under the sea is a classic science fiction story – suitable for most readers. It is short and easy to read, filled with great adventure and wonder, as the characters explore the world’s oceans with the daring Captain Nemo, and danger as they encounter many peculiar beasts lurking in the depths…
