Specialist Mathematics Activity Day in Leongatha 

James and Parth, accompanied by Fab, inaugurated the 2026 CHES Regional Activity Day sessions with a day at Leongatha Secondary College. Joined by students from Foster Secondary College, approximately twenty year 10s engaged with reasoning, problem-solving, and investigation-style tasks. These tasks required collaboration, discussion, deep thinking and resilience as students debated assigning mathematical statements into “never true, sometimes true, or always true”, worked together to tackle questions testing their logical skills, and investigated patterns which emerge when considering Rubik’s cubes. The feedback gathered highlighted students' satisfaction with the activity’s level of challenge, with several students reporting they’d never had the chance to engage with such material at this depth for an extended period. The Specialist team hope they continue their growth with us at CHES.

Algorithmics Activity Day in Bendigo 

This Activity Day engaged regional school students from the Bendigo area in computational thinking and algorithmic thinking. Students were introduced to Python fundamentals first, followed by a worked example demonstrating how coding can be used to solve real life problems. Students then applied their knowledge developing solutions with structured scaffolding and guidance from CHES teachers.

English Language Activity Day in Sunbury 

The English Language team (Amy, Andre, and Brendan) travelled to Sunbury College to run 'Language Under the Microscope' for schools including Sunbury, Keilor Downs College, Daylesford Secondary College, and Bemin Secondary College. Students started the day by exploring the big question 'What is language', which culminated in table debates. They then investigated why English is the way it is, learning about historical incursions and inventions and how they have affected the development of the language. Finally, students explored how English continues to shift, looking at slang and our use of e-Language. 

Extended Investigation Activity Day in Shepparton 

Alan, Mardon and Sam headed to Shepparton to present their “Beyond the Obvious” Activity Day program to Year 9 students from Greater Shepparton, Kyabram and Euroa Secondary Colleges. The students learned how to create strong research questions, select suitable research methods and to conduct effective investigations into their chosen topics.

VATE 'Story in Miniature' Workshop with Amy Lee

Students with a passion for creative writing recently joined our 'Stories in Miniature' workshop in preparation for the VATE competition. Together, we explored previous winning entries, unpacking the techniques, structure, and craft that make a short story compelling and memorable.

The workshop provided students with ideas and inspiration for their own writing, and we are excited to see their creativity on display. Best of luck to all CHES students who have entered the competition!

Engineering Masterclass with Dr Hua Qian Ang 

This term, CHES students had the opportunity to hear from Dr Hua Qian Ang, an award-winning engineering educator, researcher, and founder of the EPIC Engineering Comic. Students explored different engineering pathways, learned about Dr Ang's journey into her career, and gained insights into her cutting-edge research and work with organisations including Engineers Australia and Engineers Without Borders. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, giving students the chance to learn more about the many possibilities within the engineering profession.
