Senior School Report

Message from the

Director of  Learning

Senior School

Ms Kristina Vasilakis

Term 2 is a busy and important period for our Senior School students as we approach the completion of Unit 1 & 3 coursework, upcoming SACs, the Year 11 Unit 1 Exams, and the General Achievement Test (GAT) for all students undertaking a Unit 3&4 subject.

We have been extremely impressed with the excellent attendance, positive learning behaviours and growing maturity demonstrated by many of our students so far this term. Students have approached Semester One with a strong work ethic and commitment to their learning, and this consistency will continue to support them as assessment demands increase over the coming weeks.

A major focus of our Study Space Program this term has been supporting students to develop effective and sustainable study habits ahead of exams and coursework deadlines. Students have been introduced to practical revision strategies, including the Pomodoro Technique, which encourages students to break study into focused intervals with short breaks to improve concentration, productivity and time management.

Students have also been explicitly taught how to identify and respond to key VCAA command terms such as analyse, evaluate, compare and discuss. Understanding these task words is an important part of building confidence in SACs and exams, as it helps students recognise the depth and style of response required by assessment questions.

For our Unit 3&4 students, preparation for the GAT has also commenced. Students will participate in a GAT Preparation Workshop and are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the structure and timing of the assessment through regular practice questions and past GAT papers.

As we move towards the Unit 1 & 3 coursework deadline period, we encourage all students to remain focused, organised and proactive by maintaining consistent attendance, using class time effectively and seeking support early when required. Small, consistent efforts each day can make a significant difference to student confidence and success.

We are also pleased to continue our partnership with Elevate Education, who are offering a series of free parent webinars throughout Term 2 focused on exam preparation, supporting students during assessment periods and developing positive study habits at home.

Thank you to our students, families and staff for their continued support throughout a demanding but rewarding term.

Year 12 VM

Late in Term 1, students put their mathematical skills into action by completing an exciting project recreating a scale replica of the iconic Albert Park Circuit Formula 1 track.

Using measurement, ratio, scale and problem-solving skills, students carefully planned and constructed detailed models of the circuit. Throughout the project, students worked collaboratively to calculate accurate dimensions, map out the famous turns of the track, and recreate key features of the course. The task challenged students to apply classroom learning in a practical and engaging way while also encouraging creativity, teamwork and persistence.

The completed replicas showcased an impressive level of detail and precision, with students taking great pride in their final products. It was fantastic to see students so engaged in hands-on learning and making real-world connections between mathematics and major sporting events such as the Australian Grand Prix.

Congratulations to all students involved for their outstanding effort and creativity throughout the project. Their work is on display in SLC.

Year 11 Newsletter Update

Unit 1 is almost over! The Year 11 cohort has made an excellent start to their VCE studies, and the end of Unit 1 is fast approaching!

As we journey towards Unit 2, here are some updates and news to be aware of:

Year 11 Mid-Year Exams

Unit 1 studies will conclude with our Mid-Year Exams in Week 8 (9/6 – 12/6). No Year 11 classes will run in this time, and students will only be required on-site for their exams.

Students must be in full school uniform and bring their Student ID Card (which they received two weeks ago) to each exam.

An approved list of materials for each exam will be communicated by subject teachers.

All exams will appear on Compass – students will be advised to check Compass, posted timetables and seating charts prior to the beginning of exams.

Good luck to all Year 11s!

Year 11 VCE Careers Expo

On Thursday 30th April, the Year 11s went out to the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre for the VCE Careers Expo.

Students got the opportunity to speak to a range of different employers and higher-education centres, including Monash University, Victoria Police and Holmesglen TAFE. Students also got to attend targeted lectures for specific VCE subjects.

Overall, it was an excellent day with many opportunities to explore future career pathways.

A massive thank you to Ms Geraldine for organising the tickets to this huge event, and to all the staff who came along to support our students!

Thank you,

Ms Anna Papagiannopoulos
