The Importance of School Routines

At Sacred Heart, we know that strong routines create strong learning environments. While routines may seem simple on the surface, research shows they play a vital role in helping students feel safe, settled and ready to learn.

According to The Australian Research Organisation (AERO), effective classroom routines provide students with structure, predictability and clarity. When students know what is expected of them, they are able to focus more fully on their learning rather than trying to work out what to do next.

Across our school, staff have worked hard to establish and consistently reinforce routines such as:

  • our attention grabber
  • entry and exit routines
  • lining up expectations
  • responding to the teacher
  • transitions between learning activities

These routines are not assumed; they are explicitly taught, practised regularly and reinforced every day. This consistency across classrooms helps students feel confident and supported, while also maximising learning time and reducing unnecessary disruptions.

Routines also support positive behaviour and student engagement. When expectations are clear and familiar, students are more likely to participate positively and experience success in the classroom.

You may hear your child talking about some of these routines at home, and we encourage families to support the importance of consistent expectations and habits. Together, we can continue to create calm, orderly and focused learning environments where every child can thrive.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students and school community.

Kind regards,

Erin Stone
