Message from the

School Principal

Dear Sacred Heart Families,

As we journey through the month of May, we are reminded that this is a special time in the Catholic Church dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Mary holds a unique and treasured place in our faith as a model of love, faith, courage and service to others.

Throughout the Gospels, Mary shows us what it means to trust in God wholeheartedly. Her quiet strength, compassion and willingness to say “yes” to God’s call continue to inspire us today. At Sacred Heart, we encourage our students to look to Mary as an example of kindness, humility and care for others in their everyday actions and relationships.

During this Month of Mary, classes may spend time praying together, reflecting on Mary’s example and participating in special liturgies and learning experiences. It is also a wonderful opportunity for families to pause and pray together, asking Mary to guide and watch over our school community.

As a school grounded in faith and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we give thanks for Mary’s loving presence and the example she provides for us all. May this month be a time of peace, reflection and hope for our students, staff and families.

Mother's Day Event

On Monday morning, we were delighted to welcome so many mothers, grandmothers and special visitors to our Mother’s Day Breakfast in the hall. It was wonderful to see our school community gathered together to celebrate and acknowledge the important role mothers and mother figures play in the lives of our children.

Following the breakfast, mums were invited into the classrooms to share in a special activity with their children. These moments provided a lovely opportunity for connection, conversation and celebration, creating memories that our children and Mums will cherish.

A special thank you to the organising time, Caitlin, Rosy and Kate for helping make the morning such a warm and memorable occasion. We hope all of our mothers and special women in our community felt appreciated and celebrated throughout Mother’s Day weekend.

Thoughts & Prayers

Yesterday the School Principal of St Margaret Mary's, our sister parish school, some sad news.

Chris, a much-loved former St Margaret Mary’s student in Year 6 2025, was involved in a serious accident last Monday afternoon while travelling home from school. Chris is now in Year 7 at St Aloysius.

Our thoughts and prayers are very much with Chris, his family, his current and past school communities, and all those who love and care for him.

As a Catholic school, we hold Chris and his family in our prayers at this very difficult time. We ask our community to continue praying for Chris’s healing, strength and recovery, and for comfort and courage for his family.

Should your child become aware of this news we know that families will speak with their children in a calm and age-appropriate way so as to reassure. Please reach out if there is any support you require for your child or children.

Loving God,

We continue to hold Chris and his family gently in our hearts.Surround them with strength, hope and the healing presence of Your love in the days ahead.May they feel the care, compassion and prayers of all those walking beside them at this time.

Amen.

A Glimpse into the History of Sacred Heart

In the past two newsletters, I have shared with you some of the history of Sacred Heart Primary School, as we prepare for our upcoming celebrations of 125 years.

1960s

In 1961, enrolments peaked at 828 with only 12 staff. Later in the 1960's there began a slight decline in overall enrolments, due mainly to the opening of other Catholic schools in the local area including St Leo the Great in Altona North & Annunciation Catholic Primary School in Brooklyn. Also, the senior school system was revised in 1965 with the phasing out of Years VII and VIII from the primary system and by 1969 enrolments were a 537.

Wishing you a great weekend.
