From the Head of Sport

It was a great start to the AIC chess, football and rugby season with some strong results across all programs. More importantly, it was great to see the fields at Ashgrove full of students on Saturday getting the opportunity to represent the College in sport. For our Year 5 students and some of our Year 7 students it was their first time in an official AIC competition wearing the Bumblebee football and rugby jerseys and a moment they will cherish.

ROUND 1

Each round of sport will get more difficult as we progress through the competition but it was pleasing to see all teams start their season on a great note. It was pleasing to see the teams who have to play in higher divisions compete strongly and even win games against higher-ranked teams. All results can be found in the individual sporting sections of the newsletter.

ROUND 2 v SPC

Most of our games in Round 2 are scheduled against St. Patrick’s College with Year 5-Open rugby games and Year 8-Open football matches being played at Shorncliffe for most teams. As usual, due to the large number of teams we have, there will also be many teams playing different colleges so please check the draw carefully. We will still have many teams playing at HOME and a reminder to these teams of the need to please assist in the college canteens prior to your son’s match.

UNIFORM

Part of representing our College is taking pride in our appearance. With all students expected to attend venues in their playing gear ready to play (besides 1st teams), it is important that you have the correct playing gear which includes BLUE shorts. IF players are wearing the incorrect shorts or socks they may be asked to leave the field this weekend.

Only MCA hoodies or jumpers are allowed. Do NOT attend weekend sport with a non-MCA jumper/hoodie/jacket on please. You will be asked to remove it.

COVID-19 PROCEDURES

We all will be keeping our fingers crossed that everyone will stay healthy and we will see the season through. We remind all families to please adhere to the COVID plans and procedures we have in place at our College and also at the venues we visit each weekend. This weekend we attend Curlew Park at Shorncliffe for the majority of our football and rugby matches, so please make sure you follow the procedures that St. Patrick’s have put in place. Every visitor to Curlew Park should be following any directions given by St. Patrick’s staff.

TRACK AND FIELD

All boys identified to represent the College this year in track and field are to make sure they have seen Mr Miles to organise their training schedule in this busy time period. Please make sure you are checking your emails for season information and the College APP for regular updates or any changes.

RUGBY LEAGUE

There will be a short amount of time to organise our teams ahead of the AIC rugby league competitions this year. Students will be asked next week to nominate if they wish to be involved. A reminder that for students to be considered in the rugby league program they needed to be playing rugby union for the College as well. This is important for ensuring all players have had some sort of “preseason” in what has been an unusual year.

The competitions will be as follows:

  • Year 5/6: Gala Day at Ashgrove - Friday, September 18
  • Year 7-Open: 2-day tournament at Iona College - Monday, September 21 & Tuesday, September 22

Good luck to all students for Round 2.

Kind regards,

David Miles
