Year 11 ATAR Geography Swan Valley Excursion

On Thursday 18 August 2022, Year 11 ATAR Geography students travelled to various locations around the Swan Valley to participate in a range of learning activities relating to viticulture and experiential tourism.

The owner of Upper Reach Winery spoke to the students about a range of topics relating to the production and consumption of wine in this region. The group then learnt about the devastating consequences of a 2017 flooding event in which all of the wineries grape crops were lost. In the afternoon, students including sketched the Swan Valley from Bells Lookout, ate some delicious chocolate at the Margaret River Chocolate Factory and learned about the coffee roasting process at Yahava KoffeeWorks.

As fieldwork and practical skills are a fundamental part of the course, it was fantastic to see the students enjoying all of the experiences on offer throughout the day. A special thank you to Mrs Nitasha Horner (HASS Teacher) and Miss Lucia Queiros (Practicum Student) for accompanying the students.

Expressions of Interest: New Inspire Representatives – Secondary

The Inspire program at John XXIII College was instigated in 2013 in response to a request from the College Leadership to promote more parent engagement and to address arising social issues affecting the students and their parents/guardians.

We are looking to appoint two new Inspire representatives one each for Primary and Secondary. Inspire representatives seek to provide high quality presenters with excellent reputations in their field. The successful candidates will work with College Leadership to seek presenters / educators that support the curriculum of the students, ensure the correct procedure for Funding Submissions is followed and report back to the Parents’ Association meetings each term.

If you are interested in an Inspire representative role please forward your expression of interest to the Parents’ Association President, Paula Hackett, on parentsassociation@johnxxiii.edu.au.

Year 11 Pilgrimage reflections

Hear some of the stories and reflections from our Year 11 students who recently returned from their pilgrimage journey of self-discovery, reflection and prayer. We thank the Bigedi Mob of the Northern Territory, who opened their lives to our students and provided them the opportunity to learn about their culture.

Health Education Program

As part of our Health Education Program, Year 10 students study a course ‘Keys 4 Life’. A road safety unit with the aim of educating students on the road rules, legislations associated with driving and attitudes around risk taking behaviours.

Thursday, 25 August, Year 10 students came together for a powerful presentation provided through PBF Road Safety in conjunction with RAC. Konnah Ruru gave an incredibly personal account of his life story and how at the age of just 16, he became a quadriplegic. Konnah discussed poor choices that were made and the ripple effect his accident had and still has on his loved ones and relationships.

We give great thanks to Konnah for his presentation and encourage all students to discuss this presentation at home.

NAS Athletics Team

On Tuesday 23 August, 170 students travelled to the State Athletics Centre to represent John XXIII College in the 2022 NAS Athletics Meet. This day provides the top five performing Years 7-10 students from each event from the Interhouse Athletics carnival the opportunity to challenge for a position on the ACC A Division Athletics Team and practice in a competitive environment before the big day. It was pleasing to have students display incredible participation along with a fighting spirit and support for others.

Thank you to Mrs Donna Kolka, Mr Daniel Maher, Miss Marie Armand, Miss Hardie and Miss Lucy Taylor for your support on the day with our team.

ACC Athletics Team

A draft team has been posted in the pavilion and notices for all students to view. This is subject to change once all challenge results are reviewed. The final ACC Athletics team will be announced on Wednesday 31 August all named team members are encouraged to attend the morning athletics training sessions with our specialist coaches. Next Friday 2 September will be a compulsory team session at the HBF Athletics Stadium, 6:30am-7:30am.

There are only eight training sessions left until the ACC A-Division Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 14 September. We look forward to seeing our athletes at as many of these sessions as possible.

ACC Soccer Grand Final

A one-week delay meant the build up to the ACC Soccer Championship Grand Final was made even bigger, but it was well worth the wait! For 12 of the 14 players, it was their final game in JTC colours, meaning they were ready to bring the action! An early goal from Mercy College put them 1-Nil down for the first half. JTC were in the fight the whole game with several shots on goal and beautiful plays throughout. Another early goal in the second half saw JTC down 2-Nil. With 15 minutes remaining a beautiful set piece involving Lachlan Fuller, Judd Macdougall and Kevin Whiston with the header to finish, put JTC right back in it with the score reading 2-1. The team’s effort was incredible to watch, and we did not give up until the end. Another late goal by Mercy College left the final score at 3-1.

It may not have been the result that we were hoping for, but the boys have done themselves and the College extremely proud. It has been a privilege to watch these boys grow together since their first NAS team in Year 7 to their final game in Year 12. To make it to the Grand Final is a huge achievement and something they will all remember for a long time to come.

Thank you to all the staff, students, parents, and family members who came down to show their support at the game and for all their support along the way. Finally, a massive thank you to Coach Gallagher for his support and commitment to the boys over the years, it has been a wonderful journey.

Surfing

Last week our Girls from Years 7-12 competed in the WA SunSmart Surfing Schools Titles. The weather was beautiful and the scene was set for a great day of surfing and body boarding. We had most of our teams make it through the first round of heats and a couple through to the semi finals. Congratulations to the partnership, Ruby Verleg and Bridget Owen who were successful in making it through to the State Final.

The culture for surfing is growing at the College and we can’t wait to see everyone back again next year. Thank you to Mr James McLaughlin for being out their with the girls and for his support along the way.

State Final - WA School State Surfing Titles

We had three teams representing John XXIII College at the WA School State Surfing Titles today. The bodyboarding duo of Ruby Verleg and Bridget Owen came away with a huge Third place. In our Senior Boys Surfing, Tom Begley and our College Captain, Tom Stokes, convincingly won their first round against Bunbury and Geraldton Schools. In the quarter final they were just beaten in a close competition but fought hard all the way through to finish 5th in the state. Our Junior Surfing Team lead by Jake and Ben Scott breezed through the rounds, until some tough competition from Mary MacKillop brought their winning streak to an end. The boys finished 3rd overall. Lots more to come from Jake and Ben with two more years left in the junior age group. With 27 other high schools competing across the state, this was an amazing effort by JTC, and we look forward to more surfing success in the future.

Junior Volleyball Schools Cup

Today we had two Year 10 teams competing in the Volleyball Schools Cup competition for the first time. As mentioned last week it is the largest schools Volleyball competition in Perth. Our teams entered today have only recently been introduced to the wonderful game with six weeks of training with our coaches, Grace Marinelli, Paul Grosshammer and Noah Schlaich.

  • Our Girls had three very close games in their pool to just miss out on a spot in the Semi-Finals
  • Our Boys won all three of their pool games to progress through to the Semi-finals and Final where they come off on top in the Gold Medal match against Ashdale Secondary College. What an incredible effort for their first Volleyball competition.

From all reports both teams got better with each game they played. Well done JTC!!

A special congratulations to Gus Doran who was named MVP of the Grand Final match.
