Magis report

Round 2 of the Law Society of Western Australia Mock Trial Competition was held on Wednesday evening at the WA Supreme Court. Our team went up against La Salle College - appearing for the Claimant in a civil matter. It was claimed that the Defendant had breached a loan agreement by failing to return a vehicle under the terms of a loan contract, and thus owed damages in the sum of $45,000.

Earlier this year, our Round 1 Trial was held in the Old Court House (and closed to spectators), due to COVID restrictions. Though performing in such a historic setting was certainly an enjoyable experience – it was great to be back in the Supreme Court!

While Mock Trials is certainly a team effort, a special mention must be made to Joshua Williams - a Year 11 student - who, unfamiliar with court proceedings, took on the role of Junior Barrister. Josh delivered a superb Opening Address for the Claimant. There is a lot of preparation involved in the lead up to the trial, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who, despite their busy schedules, enthusiastically attended lunchtime meetings.

Our Round 2 Team included:

  • Barrister 1: Joshua Williams
  • Barrister 2: Tim Gardner
  • Solicitor: James Green
  • Witness 1: Kady Wall
  • Witness 2:  Yvie Rigg
  • Judges Associate:  Laura Rutherford

The final of the Homeroom/House Magis Challenge was held on Wednesday morning, with Year 8 students taking part in a quiz which tested their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) general knowledge. Was great to see students getting into House spirit!

Congratulations to our Year 8 winners:

  • Isabelle Greenwood Hayes (Campion)
  • Thomas Walsh (Loreto)
  • Poppy Finucane (Loreto)
  • Joseph Nankivell (St.Louis)
  • Dominic Jeffery (Ward)

That completes the STEM challenge. Congratulations to the overall challenge winner - Koolyangarra House!

Congratulations to Year 9 student, Poppy Hartfield, who competed in the State Semi Final of the FameLab Academy Competition. She presented a three-minute talk on pioneer women in STEM. Special thanks to Mr Purkiss for his assistance.
