Music at BHHS in 2026

by Mr Thomas Williams, Head of Music

Welcome back everyone! We hope that you are coming to the end of the second full week of school and feeling energized, ready for the year, and already into good routines.

Speaking of which…

Practice routines! We had started many new Year 7 and 8 students off on instruments this year, and have already seen some great progress as they grapple with these new skills. Like all learning, the key is frequency. For our beginners, we always say 10-20 minutes a day to allow your body to become used to the new muscles you are needing to use, and your brain has the chance to form the new pathways to understand how to de-code this new information.

This year, we are excited to welcome our largest number of musical instrument enrolments to date! This also means that we welcome a new ensemble, the Junior Concert Band, conducted by our flute teacher Mr. Ben Muddyman. We also welcome our three Music Captains – Sabrina H, Sophie Y, and Edward S. You will see them throughout the year leading various events around our department.

For now, enjoy getting back into regular practice, share your best song listening with your friends and family, and we look forward to hearing you play soon.
