Year 5/6 Cluster News

Year 6 Graduation:We would like to share a photo gallery of the graduating class on graduation night. We need 2 photos of your child to show how they have grown up into the students we know today. Please include a baby photo and first day of school photo.  These photos can be emailed to Jade Fielke (fielke.jade@goldengrove.sa.edu.au) by the end of Term 3. Emails have been sent to those families who have yet to do this, I do appreciate that it can be difficult to locate said photos. Please reach out if you are having any difficulties.

Graduation Dinner is at Dimples, Tea Tree Gully Golf Course on Wednesday, November 25th. This is a wonderful night to honour and share with our Year 6 families! More information will be available soon.

SACSA events:

We have begun training for SACSA Basketball, which will be held in Week 3 this term.

Please encourage your child to continue to practise their fitness, ball and teamwork skills at home.

HOME INQUIRY:

Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.

Mathematics: Continuing to develop their recall of multiplication facts, with the goal of building automatic recall of multiplication facts up to 10 × 10.

Inquiry: As part of our new Unit of Inquiry, we encourage you to have conversations with your child about your family's history and connection to Australia.

For families who have migrated to Australia, when did your family first arrive? What brought them here? What stories, experiences or challenges have been passed down through generations?

Are there family members who could come into school to share their knowledge, experiences or stories to support our inquiry? We would love students to learn from the rich and diverse histories within our school community.

Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop:

As we begin Term 4, students will continue to strengthen their independence and stamina as readers and writers. In Reader's Workshop, we will focus on sustaining engagement with increasingly challenging texts, deepening comprehension and sharing thoughtful responses to reading. In Writer's Workshop, students will work on extending their writing stamina, developing and elaborating on ideas, and applying the writing skills they have developed throughout the year. Our focus will be on consolidating learning, building confidence and encouraging students to take greater ownership of their reading and writing as they approach the end of the year.

Mathematics:

Students have begun inquiring into chance and probability through engaging, hands-on games and real-life contexts. They have been exploring probability language to describe the likelihood of different events, using terms such as certain, likely, unlikely and impossible. As the unit progresses, students will investigate chance through practical experiments, make predictions, collect and analyse results, and compare expected outcomes with actual results. Throughout these investigations, students will be encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking and justify their reasoning.

Inquiry:

We have begun our ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’ Unit of Inquiry. The central idea for this unit is:

“The actions and decisions of people shape the development and identity of societies over time.”

As we explore this concept, it would be helpful for students to discuss their family heritage at home. Conversations about your family's history, including whether your family migrated to Australia and the reasons behind that decision, can provide valuable connections to our learning.

Students may like to ask family members about the push and pull factors that influenced migration decisions and how these experiences have shaped their family's identity and story.

Reminders:

Hats – As the UV steadily increases it is important that students bring their hat every day.  Please check with your child to see if they have a hat.
