Term 4 in Grade 2

It has been lovely to welcome our students back and we look forward to another busy and productive term.

Numeracy

In Term Four, through the EMP program, students will focus on building their place value knowledge of three- and four-digit numbers. This will include reading, writing and regrouping numbers. We will continue to focus on addition and subtraction, moving to three-digit numbers as students build confidence and develop their ability to regroup the ones and tens within these algorithms. Students will also explore different ways to solve division problems, including using arrays and skip counting, before progressing to more traditional algorithms that include remainders in their answers.

Grade 2 students will develop an understanding of fractions by learning about halves, quarters and eighths. This will include exploring fractions of shapes and collections of items. Measurement concepts such as capacity, mass and area will continue to be a focus, with students using informal and formal units to measure and compare measurements. Students will also collect and interpret simple data as part of their statistics learning. They will conduct surveys, interpret data and display their findings in various ways, including using picture graphs.

Literacy

This term, the Year Two students will continue to build their fluency and comprehension to read decodable texts independently and accurately using the text Fantastic Mr Fox. They will focus on reading strategies such as questioning, inferring, finding keywords, retelling, predicting, and visualising. Students will continue to revisit letter sounds through Literacy Daily Review and Spelling Mastery, particularly focusing on long vowel phonemes, silent letters, multisyllable words, and suffixes, and applying this knowledge to read (decode) and write (encode) words.

This term, students who have completed the Little Learners Program will not be bringing home Little Learners texts. Instead, they are encouraged to read books from home or borrow books from the school or local library.

In Writing lessons, Year Two students will explore the syntax and structure of narrative, informative, persuasive and procedural texts. Students will further develop their abilities to expand sentences by using conjunctions, adjectives, and adverbs, while also enhancing their word choice, sentence fluency, and use of correct punctuation. They will continue to develop Speaking and listening skills by voicing opinions and reasons to persuade others. In addition, they will be encouraged to join in class discussions by listening, contributing their knowledge and asking questions.

Units of Work

In Term Four, the ‘Survive and Thrive’ unit will focus on how plants grow. Students will explore plants in the school environment and investigate what plants need to thrive, including water, soil and sunlight. They will plant seedlings in different conditions and track their growth while practising recording observations, hypothesising and predicting in their biology journals.

Learning was enriched by an excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens in the first week of term. During the excursion, students participated in the Seasonal Garden Discovery program and a guided garden tour, where they explored and observed a variety of plants, made potpourri and potted plants.
