Weekly Values Focus - Resilience

Week 3: Footscray West students persevere and see things through

At Footscray West, we persevere and see things through! Perseverance means continuing to work towards a goal, even when something feels difficult, takes time or does not go the way we expected. Sometimes learning requires us to be patient and keep going when we would rather stop.

We can show perseverance by breaking a big task into smaller steps, trying a different strategy or asking for help when we need it. We might be working on a tricky maths problem, writing a piece of work that needs several drafts or learning a new skill in sport. We may feel frustrated when we cannot get it right straight away. Instead of giving up, we can take a breath, think about what we already know and decide what we could try next.

Perseverance does not mean rushing or expecting ourselves to be perfect. Sometimes the best thing we can do is slow down, practise and give ourselves time. We can also encourage others when they are finding something difficult. A simple “Keep going, you’re getting there!” can help someone feel supported. When we stick with a challenge, we often discover that we are capable of much more than we first thought.

This week, let’s notice the moments when something feels hard and practise seeing it through. What could you do when you feel like giving up? Could you break the task into smaller steps, ask for help, take a short pause or try a new strategy? Remember, progress does not always happen quickly, but every effort counts.
