Year 11 Psych students recently investigated whether mutual interdependence and superordinate goals can reduce group prejudice. In a hands-on activity, students worked in randomly assigned groups to design an outfit using only garbage bags.
The task required teamwork, problem-solving, and shared responsibility, encouraging students to collaborate with peers they wouldn’t normally work with.
Despite initial hesitation, many reported improved communication and stronger group cohesion. The final fashion parade highlighted not just creativity, but how working toward a common goal can reduce social barriers and promote inclusion in everyday school settings.
