Dear Families,

Recently, our First Nations students and Grade 6 leaders had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a very special Casey Central Network of Schools First Nations Day, held at the magnificent Bunjil Place.

The day brought together the majority of First Nations students from schools across our network, along with school leaders, for a celebration of culture, connection, identity and community. It was fantastic to see so many young people gathered in one place, proudly learning about and celebrating the world’s oldest continuous living culture.

Throughout the day, students participated in a broad variety of engaging activities designed to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and traditions. Just as importantly, the day provided an opportunity for our Koorie students to connect with one another, develop new friendships and recognise that they are part of a strong and vibrant community extending well beyond the gates of their own school.

The enthusiasm of the students throughout the day was wonderful to see. They embraced the activities, conversations and opportunities presented to them and returned to school with plenty of stories to share. By all reports, they had a brilliant day!

It was particularly fitting that such an important event was held at Bunjil Place. Bunjil, the powerful creator spirit who takes the form of the wedge-tailed eagle in the traditions of the Bunurong and Wurundjeri peoples, is an important cultural figure across our region. The setting provided a meaningful connection between the purpose of the day and the Country on which our schools learn, work and play.

Events such as this are important for all of us. They provide an opportunity to celebrate the strength and richness of First Nations cultures while ensuring our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students feel a genuine sense of pride, belonging and connection.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone across the Casey Central Network who contributed to making the day possible. We look forward to seeing this wonderful event continue to grow and become an important part of our network calendar.
