Senior Cricket State Finals

On Tuesday 15th our Senior Boys Cricket team became the second best Senior School Boys team, in the state of Victoria...WOW!  Starting their campaign in Term 1, self-appointed Captains Charlie and Millar were desperate to fill a side in the Beachside Round Robin, this being their final year of Interschool Sport. Gathering Jack, Raf and T.K. from Year 12 and Lachie O, Rudi, Matthew and Owen from Year 11, the team was still short. The ever-convincing captains sought the help of Year 10 student Lachie M. and to round out the team added three soccer players (who had never played a game of competition cricket before), Jacob, Stefano and Alessandro. 'Let's have some fun' was the call, and they certainly did that.

Between February and October, the team won nine games in a row to get to the State Final, including Tuesday morning's win in the State Semi-Final against SEDA College. SEDA are renowned for their sport development program, a win against this side was not expected but like every game before this one, the boys gave it their best and when things didn't appear to be going Chelt's way, they held their heads up. They supported each other, showed some impeccable fielding skills and got on with the job, to get them to the final match. State Final Runners Up is an outstanding achievement that the Chelt.Sec boys should be very proud of. Rowville SC Cricket Academy, coached by Darren Berry have won this competition for the last two years and a three-peat was in their sights.

Having the privilege to watch this team throughout 2024 was an absolute delight for this cricket-watching fan and their coach Mr. Gibson. Outstanding cricket skills were on display, teamed with great sportsmanship and above all, mateship made this team a success. Watching the group enjoy the sport, coaching and encouraging their friends was a highlight. Other highlights of which there were many, included Millar's 100, Alessandro the soccer player taking a wicket (to a very shocked and embarrassed batsman), Tim K.'s catching skills (catches win matches). The music and laughter on the bus trips were a lot of fun and I even had a very 'proud mum moment' when I was stopped by an elderly couple in McDonalds, who complimented me on "What a lovely group of boys they are".

A school cricket season to be very proud of. Congratulations to the team and enormous thanks and congratulations to Coach Ben 'Gibbo' Gibson.

All gave their personal best and achieved mixed results. Congratulations to Sam K. who has qualified for the State Track and Field Under 14 High Jump.

SMR Year 8 Cricket

After winning the Beachside Round Robin in Term 1 our Year 8 Boys Cricket team headed to Roy Dore Reserve in Carrum, on Tuesday, to play in the Southern Metro Regional Quarter Final. Cheltenham SC vs Dromana SC. Losing the coin toss, Chelt.Sec were sent into bat and the following 20 overs were something to behold. Opening the batting were Harvey G. and Owen B. with Ewan F. in at the first drop. What a fantastic display of batting!

Harvey 34 including 5 fours (lbw), Owen 115 including 7 sixes and 15 fours (not out) Ewan 45 including 8 fours and a six...WOW! Frustrating their opposition and giving our Coach, Mr Minster, a very sore neck. Umpiring at square leg gave Mr Minster the best view of the ball going over his head to the boundary line. Our bowlers took on the challenge of defending 232 runs by spreading out the workload. Sam, Owen, Harvey 1 wicket. Ewan and Joel 2 wickets. Joel 3 catches.  The Year 8 SMR Semi-Final and Final will take place on October 31st at Aspendale Gardens Reserve.  Thank you, Mr Minster and Year 11 Support Matteo and Elan.

SMR Intermediate Hockey

Cheltenham's Intermediate Hockey team competed in the Southern Metro Regional hockey tournament at Hawthorn Hockey Ground. The team fared very well in the round-robin stage, defeating both Sandringham SC and Mount Eliza SC 1 - 0. However, they were narrowly defeated in the third match after Frankston SC scored a goal in a short corner of the game after the final siren. Frankston SC went on to advance to the state finals. Well done to all the players, we look forward to seeing more hockey at Chelt.Sec. Thank you Mr Paul Smart for your coaching expertise.
