Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of St Brendan’s,

Before I share my final message to our community for 2025, I want to pause and acknowledge the tragic and deeply distressing events that unfolded in Bondi on Sunday night. Like so many, I was heartbroken by what occurred. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, the first responders, the many quiet heroes, the Jewish community, the Bondi community, and people across Sydney and Australia who have been affected by this senseless act.

At times like these, it is natural for both adults and children to feel unsettled. Please know that our school is here to support you. If you or your child are finding this difficult in any way, I encourage you to reach out so we can provide care and reassurance.

I have asked our teachers to respond to students’ questions thoughtfully and honestly if they arise, always reassuring children that they are safe. Teachers have also been guided to gently reinforce the values that anchor us as a community; the values of respect, kindness, tolerance and peace. I asked that this be done without dwelling unnecessarily on the details. They will, of course, let me know if they have any concerns about a child’s wellbeing.

In moments of sadness and uncertainty, it is these shared values and our care for one another that help us move forward together. It may be helpful to pray this prayer this week:

Loving God, We come before you with heavy hearts in the wake of the Bondi tragedy. We pray for peace where there is fear, healing where there is pain, and comfort where there is deep sorrow.

Hold close all those who have lost loved ones. Surround the injured, the witnesses, and the first responders with your gentle care. Strengthen our community with compassion, courage and hope.

During this Advent time, may your light shine in the darkness, reminding us that love is stronger than violence, and that together, held in your grace,

we can begin to heal.

Amen.

As we reach the conclusion of a wonderful school year, I write this final newsletter piece for 2025 with a heart full of gratitude and immense pride in our shared journey. We began our year immersed in the theme: Teamwork and Kindness. It is truly pleasing to reflect on the past twelve months and the excellent achievements we have celebrated together. I like to think that St Brendan’s is much more than just a school; it is a vibrant, supportive community where each member is encouraged to learn and grow.

I have been encouraged and inspired by the resilience and enthusiasm of our students, the dedication of our excellent staff, and the unwavering support of you, our wonderful families. It is this strong sense of community that makes our school truly special. Together, we have celebrated academic achievements, artistic talents, sporting prowess, and the daily acts of kindness that define the spirit of St Brendan’s. We have navigated challenges as a united front, always guided by our shared values and the best interests of every child. Watching our students grow into curious, compassionate, and confident young individuals has been the highlight of our year. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together.

As we look towards the holiday break and the promise of a new year, I remain confident that St Brendan's will continue to flourish. The future is bright for our wonderful school, and I eagerly anticipate all the amazing things we will achieve together in 2026. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being a part of your children’s lives and this special community. I wish you all a safe, restful, and joyful Christmas and a happy, prosperous and peaceful new year.
