Behind The Crest

Welcome to Behind The Crest, a new series of student-led stories from across St Bede's College. Founded by proud Year 8 students Jimmy, Noah, Miguel, Jacob, Marcus, and Chase, Behind The Crest is designed to inspire and connect students and staff.
This edition features a profile on Italian teacher, Miss Sarah Cristanelli and our experience with the Class of 2026 Graduation Assembly.
Sempre Avanti: The Journey of Miss Cristanelli
A Strong Italian Connection
With a strong connection to Italy and a passion for language, Miss Cristanelli brings her own experiences into the classroom. Both of her parents, as well as her grandparents and great-grandparents, were born and raised in Italy, making her the first generation of her family to be born in Australia. She moved from Italy to Australia in Year 7, which she described as a challenging experience due to the language barrier and culture shock. This experience later inspired her to become an Italian teacher, as she understands firsthand what it is like to learn a new language.
Passion for Teaching and Creativity
One of Miss Cristanelli’s favourite parts of teaching Italian is seeing students have an “aha moment” when they finally understand a new concept. She has taught Italian from Prep to Year 12, as well as Art, Music and Drama. She particularly enjoys teaching Years 11 and 12 this year, because the content is challenging and always gives her something new to explore. Outside the classroom, she has a strong creative side and once considered becoming an artist, especially an illustrator for children’s books.
A Teacher Who Loves Sport
Away from teaching, Miss Cristanelli has an impressive sporting background. She has tried many different sports, including Gaelic football, AFL, figure skating and even running a marathon. These days, she enjoys playing beach volleyball during summer.
Her advice to students is simple: “give it a shot” and stay consistent, especially when learning a language. Her favourite Italian saying, “Sempre avanti”, meaning “always move forward”, is a reminder to keep going even when things become difficult.
2026 Graduation Assembly
St Bede’s Class of 2026 Graduation Assembly was celebrated on Thursday 15 October, and it was an unforgettable event filled with excitement, Beda spirit and incredible memories! While the assemblies over the past years have been full of energy, this one was truly next level.
The assembly kicked off with a sensational drumline performance, welcoming the Year 12s as they entered proudly waving their house flags. The powerful beats and electric atmosphere set the tone for an incredible celebration.
The excitement continued as Mr Beaumont announced the House Awards, building the anticipation before revealing that Benilde had taken home the House Award! Benilde students erupted with excitement, jumping out of their seats and filling the room with cheers. The moment was a true reflection of the passion, pride and Beda spirit that make our school community so special.
Following the celebrations, Ms Frizza delivered a wonderful reflection, reminding us of the memories, friendships and experiences that have shaped our time at St Bede’s. Her words provided a meaningful moment to reflect on the journey of the Class of 2026 and the lasting connections formed throughout their years at the College.
Overall, the Graduation Assembly was a fantastic celebration of the Class of 2026, bringing together school spirit, reflection and unforgettable moments. It was a fitting tribute to the graduating class and the lasting legacy they leave behind at St Bede’s.
