Desert Rose Playgroup News

CAITLIN CONOVER, RUBY BARBER, LINNEA OETZMANN & THEA SALIBA

You may have noticed a new feature in our playgroup room - a seasonal table created especially for summer here in Central Australia.

In Steiner Early Childhood settings, a seasonal or nature table is a simple, changing display that reflects the rhythms of the natural world. It is intended to quietly mirror what children are experiencing outside - the colours, textures, creatures, and materials of the season. Over time, this repeated exposure helps children develop an intuitive sense of nature’s cycles and a feeling of belonging within them.

For summer, our table features warm yellows, natural wood, felted animals, seed pods, insects, and found treasures from the environment. One special addition is an empty wasp nest shell, discovered on a walk and carefully placed on the table - a beautiful example of how nature offers interest and wonder when we slow down and notice.

You may remember that we have always had a seasonal table in our space. That table remains, but it sits high and is largely out of reach and sight for the children. This new table has been intentionally placed at child level, where it can be seen, touched, explored, and gently played with. It is meant to be a hands-on experience, inviting curiosity and connection rather than observation from a distance.

We warmly invite families to take part. If you and your child come across something interesting on a walk - a smooth stone, a seed pod, a fallen leaf, a shell, or another small natural treasure - you are welcome to bring it in for the seasonal table. These shared contributions help the table grow and change, just as the season itself does.

This small, accessible space offers children a quiet place to engage with nature indoors, supporting imagination, sensory exploration, and a sense of seasonal rhythm throughout the year. We look forward to watching the seasonal table grow and change over time, reflecting both the natural world around us and the experiences the children bring into the space.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Sugar and Spice Boutique for their generous support in helping make our beautiful new wooden rocking horse possible.

It has already brought so much delight to the children, and we are incredibly grateful for their kindness and community spirit.
