Class 7 News

PAMELA KEIL

Class Seven are delving into the wonderous realm of Arthurian Literature - the stories of King Arthur and his chivalrous knights. In this main lesson block, we return to some of the themes from Class One fairy tales, with magic and archetypal characters filling each tale. In Class One these themes were present but not explored, but Class Seven students are now awake to the deeper meanings and symbols within the stories.

Through this main lesson, we explore the idea of the "Hero's Journey" - a story genre where a knight undergoes physical and mental transformations in the process of becoming a hero. All characters in the story have a role in bringing this transformation about. Every knight's quest is rich in meaning and the students develop a deeper understanding of the symbols and the strategies that deliver these moral lessons.

Class Seven students learn about the Knight's Code of Chivalry and discuss ways we can apply these principles in today's world. They develop their own sense of honour and write their own stories using the strategies they've learned.

At this age, we also delve into the meaning behind the words and speaking styles used in the classic Arthurian Literature. The students learn to interpret the unusual vocabulary and dense sentence structure, and then to broaden their own writing to encompass what they learned. As the term progresses, they will take this learning into their English sessions to develop their own knightly tale of adventure and glory.

The moral lessons they embody will stand them in good stead as they move into adolescence and a time of change and empowerment.
