Junior Learning Community

Year 2
Things you need to know about:
Home reading:
As the children become familiar with our class routines and expectations, we would love your support by reminding your child before school if it is their check-in day, and for them to meet with their teacher as soon as they arrive at school. A reminder that students are expected to read a minimum of 3 times a week at home. This is a way to build your child’s fluency when reading. Fluency is an important skill for our Grade 2 students and will be a focus for our year.
Current Learning:
Literacy:
The children are currently learning about Pronouns and Informative texts. Children have been enjoying the story ‘The Whale and the Snail’ and completing associated work. Literacy screening tests for each child are now complete. Students have also completed the WARP initial assessment. WARP is a passage fluency test and provides teachers with an indication of your child’s overall reading ability.
Numeracy:
This week the children completed a Place Value assessment demonstrating their understanding of 3-digit numbers to conclude this topic. Our new unit of work is Measurement which will involve the students reading analog times and calandars. Students will also experience clockwise and anticlockwise turns. Students would benefit from reading
clocks and calendars at home.
The children enjoyed participating in Pancake Day on Tuesday. The children listened and learnt about why we celebrate Shrove Tuesday. They then enjoyed eating a pancake with their favorite topping. This is evident by the beautiful smiles in the photos that are included.
We look forward to meeting with you, in our scheduled 3-way chats in Week 6. This is another wonderful opportunity to get to know your child better before embarking on our school year together.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email us or pop in and see us before or after school.

Year 1
Over the past two weeks, the Grade One students have completed some amazing learning! They have continued revising the letters and sounds they learned last year in Foundation and have now begun their weekly morning check-ins for home reading.
Just a reminder to please try to read with your child at least four times a week for a minimum of 15 minutes each session. This helps ensure students are consolidating their learning. Students’ check-in days are listed below.
Last week, students completed their first Mathematics unit on Data. To conclude the unit, students collected data from a small packet of Skittles and graphed their results. Afterwards, they enjoyed eating their delicious Skittles!
