GWR Athletics

On Thursday the 9th of October, Lily Peacock, Billy and Louie Welsh competed at the GWR Track and Field carnival at Ballarat's Llanberris Athletics Reserve.

First up was Billy Welsh, running in the Open 3000m event. Billy started well, pacing himself and staying close to the leaders. After the third lap, he began to overtake those in front, placing himself in a comfortable position. After the final lap-bell rang, the race leaders pushed hard, seeing Billy narrowly miss out on the podium, finishing in a respectable 5th place. What a great effort!

Meanwhile, Lily Peacock competed in the 18-20Yr Old Girls Shot Put. Lily threw a marvellous first throw, with a PB distance of 8.38m. Once all competitors had completed their throws, Lily was pleased to realise that she had taken out third place with her first attempt. Well done, Lily, for making it to your first ever GWR competition, prior to graduating later this year.

Waiting for the 14Yr Old Boys Javelin event, Louie Welsh was nervous and started to doubt his ability. However, once competition started, Louie quickly locked in, throwing a  22.73m for his first throw, followed by a PB distance of 27.20m for his 2nd throw, and finishing with 20.21m for his final throw. Of the 8 competitors Louie was the only one not to fault, securing first place with his 2nd throw. Well done, Louie, for making it through to the State Championships, which will be held next Monday in Melbourne.

Congratulations to each of our competitors for their outstanding achievements. Everyone did a fantastic job, gave their all and had fun on the day, representing the College with pride.

Year 7 and 8 Basketball

On Friday the 12th of September, the Year 8 Boys Basketball teams headed to Ballarat to participate in the Eureka Division tournament. With great numbers, we split into two teams, and had a fantastic day out.

Team A, had a day filled with mixed results. After a very tough game first up against Phoenix College, we steadily improved. Throughout the day, the team focussed on movement, passing and taking the right shots, and we made huge progress. Our sportsmanship was on show from the start of the day, through to the end. We finished 3rd in our pool thanks to a great percentage, leading us to a final against Woodman’s Hill. We’d like to thank Mr Sev for coaching us, Miss Hughes for all her organisation, and Mr Webb for the elite training sessions.

Team B was made up of Bryce Spicer, Reece Gilbert, Archie Chestnut, Jonah Burrill, Kaylum Vella and Nayt Merriman. We had a day full of fun, challenges and learning moments. The team showed great improvement throughout the day, along with a wonderful display of sportsmanship. Despite no wins, the boys put up a fight and challenged their opponents every chance they had. Shout out to Jonah Burrill, who was named the best on court for the day. Thank you to Miss Hughes for all her organisation of the day and coaching us, and Mr Webb and Mr Sev for the training sessions.
