U15 Girls Basketball

Southern NSW Finals Series

Our Riverina Champion Under 15 Girls Basketball team travelled to Shoalhaven to compete in the Southern NSW CHS Finals of the Statewide Knockout on Friday 12th September.

Our first game was against Moss Vale High School, our very own “Rahul Dravid” (if your too young to know who that is Google it, or ask Mr Kroek), and Best on Court, Sarah Hewitt was an impenetrable “Wall” in both offense and defense. They couldn’t go over her, couldn’t go round her and couldn’t go under her in defense while her deft little left handed sky hooks and lay-ups were reminiscent of Kareem Abdul Jabbar in his prime (again, Google it or ask Mr Kroek for you young ones). Sam Kerr added the polish and style at both ends of the court and even added a scintillating 3 pointer from beyond the line, despite having her three-point shooting license revoked after an abysmal shooting performance in the warm up. Gemma’s long limbs and tenacity in defense shut down all scoring options for Moss Vale throughout the first three quarters, while Zoe ran up and down the court picking off steals, laying on assists and providing the energy of a Jack Russell dog on red cordial.  Ella played her usual high paced and classy basketball, running the legs of the opposition with fast breaks and a ferocious desire to steal the ball at any opportunity in defense. What started out as a close game, for the first 5 minutes, blew out to a 59-25 point victory for our Yeti’s at the final buzzer, putting the girls into the final.

Game Two, or what shall now be known as the Isla Donaldson Show, was against Dulwich Hill High school from Sydney East. Isla starred at both ends of the court, surprising even herself with her potency in offence and her sheer mongrel in defense. Ably assisted by her partner in crime Sienna, the girls began blowing Dulwich away early.  Dezi was stubborn and determined for the entire game (yes, I know that’s a shock), even out rebounding the tallest player from the opposition, (who must have been at least 6’6”), on multiple occasions. Milla cruised up and down the court like a graceful swan providing an option at both ends, while handing out assists to her teammates like Santa handing out presents at Christmas time. At the end of the game, the Yeti girls cruised to a convincing 67-16 win. This now puts them through to the NSW CHS Top 8 Finals at the start of next term. A fantastic achievement for a small country high school that always bats well above other people’s expectations. (but not ours!!) Congratulations and well done Girls.
