The Rock & Marrocka Emu Farm

On Monday 8th September, Year 7 and Year 8 students had the exciting opportunity to visit The Rock and Marrocka Emu Farms to complement their learning of Wiradjuri language. Students explored tools, practices, stories, plants and animals that are important to Wiradjuri culture. Activities at The Rock included a Welcome to County with Uncle Richard, viewing Aboriginal artefacts, and a bush walk to see a special scar tree. At the Emu Farm, students got to walk with emus, hold baby emu chicks and learn all about these amazing animals.

A big thank you goes out to Uncle Richard, Mr Makin, Mr Watterson, Mr Kelly, Mrs Collins and Mrs Barrett for helping out on the day. Here are some highlights from students who attended:

The best part of the day:

“Running with the emus” - Bentley B

“I think that walking with the emus was the best part because it was both funny and cool” - Oliver B

“Walking with the emus” - Jaxson D

“The best part about the excursion was getting to hold a baby emu” - Sienna L

“The best part was the emu farm and when I held the emu chick. Also walking at The Rock and learning the stories behind it” - Jackson M

Learning something new:

“Emus can get a thing called curly neck syndrome so it makes their neck literally curly” - Bentley B

“I learnt what baby emus look like” - Oliver B

“Emus make a drum noise” - Jaxson D

“Something new I learned was about the inside of a tree. How many layers it has on the inside is how long it has been alive for” - Sienna L

“Emu knees bend the opposite way to ours” - Micah C

Advice for future students:

“Definitely do it, it’s a good experience” - Bentley B
