GRADE 5 BIKE EDUCATION – CYCLING SKILLS AND SIMULATIONS

Grade 5 students will begin their Bike Education Program next week on Friday November 6th. They will remain on school grounds completing cycling skills and simulations.

Students will need to bring their bikes and helmets to school on Friday November 6th.

We remind students that if they are riding to school they will need to wear their helmets and dismount their bikes and walk on school grounds. Bicycles and helmets can be left outside the students’ Learning Space. If parents are dropping off bicycles at school, they can remain in the Bike Shed for the duration of the program.

TERM 4 SWIMMING

Thank you to parents for ensuring your child is ready for swimming. The program has run smoothly so far, thanks to both parents and staff. We are over half way through the swimming program.

A reminder there will be no swimming next week due to Monday being a student free day and Tuesday being Melbourne Cup Day. Swimming will resume as normal in Week 6 and then in Week 7 there are some changes to times of lessons and students will have an additional Water Safety Lesson on either Thursday or Friday that week also. Further information will be provided in future newsletters.

Any queries please don’t hesitate to contact me.

SWAP Term 4 Juniors and Seniors

This term, students have been exploring identity, individual interests and gender stereotypes through our SWAP (Student Wellbeing and Performing Arts) program. Through drama, movement, games and group discussions, students have been learning about the qualities, strengths, interests and experiences that make each person unique.

Students participated in activities that encouraged them to discover similarities and differences with their peers, share their favourite games and activities, and reflect on the many aspects of their identity. They also explored how labels and stereotypes can influence the way we view others, learning that being a boy or a girl does not determine what someone can enjoy or achieve.

Through role-play and dramatic expression, students practised responding respectfully to unfair comments and challenging stereotypes in positive ways. They were encouraged to appreciate individual differences, celebrate their own interests and recognise that everyone deserves to feel included, valued and respected.

These learning experiences have reinforced the importance of kindness, respect and inclusion, while reminding students that we do not all need to be the same to belong. At SFS, we celebrate the unique qualities that make each member of our school community special!

STEM Challenge: Keep the Popsicle from Melting!

Our Grade 3/4 students became engineers as they applied their understanding of heat transfer to design, build and test a lunch box or mini esky in order to keep a popsicle cold. Using materials such as cardboard, aluminium foil and plastic containers, students explored how insulation can slow down heat transfer.

They tested their designs in the sun for 20 minutes, observed the results and discussed how they could improve their creations. This hands-on challenge encouraged students to think creatively, solve problems collaboratively and use scientific evidence to evaluate their designs.

Some of our students were successful and some were not but all enjoyed this learning experience and the tasty treat afterwards!

JUNIOR EXCURSION TO SCIENCE WORKS

Last Friday, our Junior students enjoyed an exciting excursion to Scienceworks!

We have been learning all about how forces can make objects move, exploring how toys and everyday objects need either a push or a pull to make them work. It was wonderful to see the students making connections between what we have been learning and the hands-on experiences at Scienceworks.

We also had so much fun exploring the museum and discovering a range of fascinating exhibits!

  • Beyond Perception: Students explored how our senses help us understand the world around us, discovering optical illusions, light, sound and other fascinating scientific phenomena.
  • Sportsworks: Students put their bodies to the test by exploring movement, speed, strength and coordination. They had opportunities to race, jump, throw and discover the science behind different sporting activities.
  • Think Ahead: Students explored inventions, technology and ideas for the future. They had opportunities to imagine future cities, design vehicles and discover how science and technology might change the way we live.
  • The Pumping Station: Students discovered the history of Melbourne's pumping station and explored the enormous machinery that once helped manage the city's water and sewage systems.

It was a fantastic day filled with curiosity, discovery and plenty of excitement! Our students loved exploring, asking questions and learning through these wonderful hands-on experiences.
