This term, in Inquiry, we have been learning about how access to education can be different for people around the world.
We began the unit by exploring the concept of choice and how this can influence our access to educational resources and opportunities. Students then investigated a range of factors that affect people's schooling experiences, such as where they live, climate hazards and their socioeconomic background. We looked at local and global examples, including the impact of bushfires on Australian schools and how schools in Japan respond to earthquakes.
We then explored the idea of interconnectedness and how education can influence other aspects of a person's life, including future employment, income, access to higher education and quality of life. In the final weeks of the term, students have been applying their learning through a transfer project, where they developed an educational pathway based on an individual's circumstances and location. We will finish off the term with an Inquiry Expo, where students will have the opportunity to visit other classrooms and explore projects created by students within the Year 6 cohort. Students will not only be sharing their own learning but also take on the role of an audience member by listening to their peers, taking notes and asking questions about their peers' projects.
It has been great to hear students reflect on their learning, and here are some of their reflections and takeaway from our Inquiry unit.
Kevin - I enjoyed learning about the schooling system in other countries. I am grateful that Australia is a developed country with a good schooling system, which makes me feel grateful that I get these opportunities.
Saheli- I enjoyed learning about schools in different countries and the different levels of education. I also enjoyed comparing Australia and Zimbabwe's education system, and that we are very fortunate here in Australia.
Ravya - I found it interesting how we got to create our own person and form their journey for our transfer projects. I learnt that there are other options after high school such as TAFE because I thought that there was only the option of university.
Parivan - I loved learning about the different entry requirements to get into further education. This helps me prepare for when I am older, helping me understand the pathway I need to take to get a successful job. This information makes me grateful for those who support me through my learning journey.
Akshara - I learnt about educational opportunities and different barriers that might stop others from going to school or university. I enjoyed being able to create an educational pathway for my person and being creative but realistic with it.
