Welcome to this week’s update on all things Year 5/6, our last one for Term 3. We hope you enjoy reading through this edition and seeing what our students have been up to. Happy reading, from Kaitlyn and Lois

Maths

In maths, we have been tackling some really tricky mental math problems and sharing our working out with the class. We used empty number lines to draw our "jumps," which made hard subtraction questions way easier to visualise and solve. We also learned two new advanced strategies: levelling for addition and constant difference for subtraction. They were challenging at first, but they have definitely given us faster calculation skills. To finish off, we put our decimal skills to the test by creating a budget for a fake class party, which showed us how we will actually use these math skills in the real world.

MA3-AR-01- Selects and applies appropriate strategies to solve problems involving addition and subtraction

MA3-RN-02- Compares, orders and represents decimals

English

Recently in English, we have been putting a lot of effort into writing a persuasive letter to Mr Francis about why we should get a school wellbeing dog. Mrs Barclay shared an awesome example written by Emma Barclay to inspire Stage 3. It gave us some great inspiration, so we read through it together and made some adjustments to make our own arguments even stronger.

EN3-CWT-01- Plans, creates, and revises written texts for multiple purposes and audiences.

EN3-RECOM-01- Fluently reads and comprehends texts for wide purposes, analysing structures and language.

HSIE

For the past two weeks, we have been working on an exciting history project about the many different Aboriginal languages across Australia. First, we did our own research to find interesting facts. Now, we are teaming up with a partner to combine what we learned and turn it into an awesome infographic.

HT3-2- describes and explains different experiences of people living in Australia over time

HT3-5- applies a variety of skills of historical inquiry and communication

Term 3 has been incredibly busy, and we have all put so much effort into our classroom learning. After working so hard over the last ten weeks, we are really looking forward to a relaxing break spent with the people we care about most. We hope our classmates and teachers have a very happy and safe holiday.

See you next term for Term 4
