Classroom Teacher

Hi Highvale!

I am excited to introduce myself as the new Student Leadership Coordinator, taking over from Amanda Gomes at the start of this term. Over this term, our students have been busy at work, participating in different events from interschool forums to guided workshops, and busy planning for future events at Highvale.

Monash Schools leadership forum

To start the term, our students met with other schools in the Monash area to discuss how leadership and student activities look at their schools. The day was run by the student leadership team at Wellington and provided our students with an opportunity to connect with other schools and leaders. A mixture of our senior sports captains, SRC captains, and aspiring senior leaders attended the day.

On Monday the 18th of May, some student leaders from years 10, 11, and 12 attended a leadership forum at Wellington Secondary College alongside the other Monash Region Schools, Brentwood Secondary, Wellington Secondary, Mount Waverley Secondary, South Oakleigh Secondary, Wheelers Hill Secondary and Ashwood High. We had the opportunity to participate in various activities organised by a few of the schools. These activities all had a common goal of addressing the qualities of a good leader and how to improve them. The skills we discussed and improved included communication, public speaking, adapting with obstacles, and teamwork. Teamwork was an especially important topic that we covered, and we focused on resilience and not only being a collection of leaders, but a dynamic group that actively supports one another to achieve a common goal. We all learnt so much about leadership and met so many new people and got to discuss many ideas that are in place at other schools to implement here at Highvale. Thank you to Wellington for hosting and to the other schools for all the input in the activities!

This week, Highvale students and staff joined together to acknowledge and raise charity for the FightMND foundation. MND which also stands for Motor Neurone Disease, is a disease that affects the body’s muscles and motor functions. In order to raise awareness for MND, staff and some of the senior students volunteered to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge. The Ice Bucket Challenge is an annual part of the MND foundation as it is meant to mimic the feeling of being paralysed and unable to move. As part of the event students were able to pay a donation to get a chance at scoring a soccer goal, and if successful got a chance to dunk a teacher of their choosing. It was very rewarding to see our school community have such a fun time while supporting those struggling. Earlier in the week, students also contributed to help and bake some wonderful, sweet treats to raise money for MND. The bake sale was a huge success, selling out and raising over $500 dollars to support MND. The event was no doubt a memorable one and served as great way to finish off our term on an exciting note. A massive thank you to all the teachers, SRC members and students who helped make the event possible.
