Term 2 Sports Report
Term 2 has provided another great opportunity for our students to get involved in interschool sport, with sports including badminton, soccer, aussie rules football and netball on offer. We also had our traditional Cross-Country events occur this term which Highvale students competed in and represented the college with pride and determination.
Boys Netball & Girls AFL Day – Wednesday 28th May
Wednesday 28th May was one of the busiest days on the sports calendar, with both the Boys Netball and Girls AFL teams taking to the courts and fields in a fantastic display of skill, teamwork, and school spirit.
Boys Netball at Sportlink Vermont South
Boys across all year levels headed to the Sportlink Centre for a full day of competition against our Waverley Division rivals, representing our school in all age groups. For the first time, year 7s and year 8s had the opportunity to compete in their own teams. All teams showed remarkable cohesion and skill, with fast-paced passing, strong defence, and accurate shooting leading the way. Unfortunately, Vermont proved too strong for the competition, but all of our competitors can be proud of their efforts.
Girls AFL at Koonung and Heatherdale Reserves
Meanwhile, our Girls AFL footy teams took to the ovals, with juniors and inters competing at Heatherdale Reserve and Seniors at Koonung Reserve. Greasy conditions made the ball slippery, but the rain held off and a great day’s competition was had. All teams played with grit and passion.
Across both sites, the girls brought fantastic energy to their games, demonstrating resilience, determination, and noticeable growth as the day progressed. Many girls had not played full games of football before. Every team showed commitment through tough defensive efforts, smart decision‑making with the ball, and strong communication throughout play.
A big acknowledgement goes to the staff and student coaches whose support made the day run smoothly and well done to all students who took part. Whether competing indoors or outdoors, the event highlighted the strength of our school community and the joy of participating in sport together.
Region Cross Country at Yarra Glen Racecourse
On Thursday 11th of June, eighteen Highvale students travelled all the way out to Yarra Glen Racecourse for the Eastern Metro Region Cross Country event and competed against the best runners from eastern region schools. Early morning fog made for an interesting drive to the venue, but it soon lifted and provided perfect conditions for the runners to compete in their respective 3km or 5km events. Whilst no Highvale runners finished in the top 10 needed to qualify for state, we still had several great runs, including a 13th place for Leela P. in year 7. Well done to all our Highvale athletes on a great day!
Looking ahead – Athletics carnival in term 3
The WHOLE SCHOOL Athletics carnival is happening on Tuesday the 28th of July. This is a COMPULSORY attendance day. It is not optional, even if students don’t wish to compete in an event. Students must meet directly at the Bill Sewart Athletics Track, just off Burwood Highway at 8:45am. All students have already been added to an event on Compass, and they MUST have a parent/carer give consent before midnight on Friday the 24th of July.
On the day, students can simply turn up and compete in any events they like, starting with the 100m sprints which will be first on the schedule. There will likely be a canteen and possibly sausage sizzle, otherwise, please bring own food and drinks. Please bring cash for food purchases. Students must wear full PE uniform or dress up in House colours!
The day should finish by 2:30pm and students will be dismissed from the venue, in a staggered format with oldest year levels departing first.
For the rest of term 3 interschool sport, the sports available are Table Tennis, Basketball and Hockey. Check Compass newsfeed for sign up links. These will already be up now! Tryouts will happen early in term 3. There will also be Division Athletics in August, which you will qualify for if you finish top 2 in one of our school Athletics carnival events. Get involved in sport and have fun!
