VET Student Spotlight – Interview with Leonard Freitag (Aviation)

From his first flight in a glider at age 10, Leonard Freitag knew he was destined for the skies. Now completing his VET Aviation course through Moorabbin Airport, Leonard is well on his way to becoming a commercial pilot - years ahead of schedule.

Each week, Leonard travels over two hours to take part in hands-on training that includes flight lessons and theory across seven subjects toward his pilot’s licence. “It feels like a big family there,” Leonard says. “We learn by doing - from taking engines apart to understanding aerodynamics through real aircraft components.”

Through the course, Leonard has developed not only technical flying skills but also confidence, independence and problem-solving abilities. “The VET course gives you responsibility for your own learning, just like university,” he explains. “It’s helped me balance school and aviation, and taught me how to stay organised.”

Leonard’s proudest moment so far? Flying a plane from Moorabbin to Yarrawonga for maintenance - his first real mission with a purpose. Looking ahead, he hopes to join the

Royal Flying Doctor Service and one day fly bush planes across the world.

His advice for other students: “Try a VET course! It’s a great way to explore your passions early and get a head start on your career.”

And of course, Leonard gives a special shout-out to the Reservoir High School Careers Team: “They’re the best! Peter and Toula are absolute legends - I wouldn’t be here without their support!”
