Principal's Perspective

Dear Parents and Carers,
Book Week
Our Book Week parade was an exciting event with many students (and staff) participating dressed in a range of exciting and interesting characters. Book Week celebrates and promotes reading and we hope this encourages further reading at school and at home.
Copies of the books nominated for the Children’s Book Council of Australia prize are in the library for students to read and look at during library time with their teacher and during lunchtimes.
Lego club
The library is open the second half of lunch most days. In the side room we also operate Lego club. Students from all year groups are welcome to attend with many coming multiple days each week. It is a very popular activity!
Students get to enjoy making and creating from a range of Lego. If you have any unused Lego that is no longer needed that you would like to donate, our students would be very grateful for any donations.
PYP Yr 6 Exhibition
Our year 6 students are working incredibly hard on the inaugural Auburn South PS PYP exhibition.
Small groups of students have had agency to craft their questions based on their interests related to a central idea. Mentor teachers from all areas in the school have been assigned a group to help guide them through the process. The PYP Exhibition is a culmination of the students’ PYP learning experiences and skills across their primary school years.
While initially scheduled for Tuesday 15 September we will be giving students more time to complete their inquiry and will be scheduling the Exhibition evening for next term. Further information will be sent home once the date/time is confirmed.
Parent Opinion Survey
After some technical difficulties, these surveys have now been distributed to parents. If possible, please take the time to complete the survey and provide your feedback. Every family should have received one emailed letter with a unique PIN to complete the survey. If your family did not receive a letter, please contact the office and we will provide you with one.
We will still be running a competition for those parents who let us know that they have competed the survey.
It is very easy to enter. Complete the survey online with your emailed link and PIN, then send an email to the school office (auburn.south.ps @education.vic.gov.au). In the subject line type: Parent Opinion Survey.
In the body of the email include your name along with the name/s of your child/ren and their year level or class. E.g. Travis Paterson, Caleb Paterson - Year 6 (or 6B).
As the survey closes on the 18th September, we will be drawing five winners out of a hat at the following weeks’ assembly. Book vouchers from Readings are the prizes.
Use of Student Toilets
In line with Child Safe Standards, adults and parents are not to use the student toilets at school. There are parent and staff toilets located near the office that parents and visitors can use. Along with the toilets in the canteen building and the single toilet located underneath the outside stairwell near the art room. Please ensure that all carers i.e., anyone responsible for dropping off or picking up students such as grandparents or senior school aged siblings, are aware that student toilets are for ASPS students only.
Leaving ASPS?
We understand that families move on for a whole host of reasons. If you are leaving Auburn South Primary School before the start of 2027 (not including year six graduating students) please email auburn.south.ps@education.vic.gov.au of your intentions to leave. This will greatly assist us with future planning and ensure that we have a clear reflection of enrolment numbers for 2027.
Hats
Hats are back! The UV rays have increased and while they do not neatly line up with term dates, we are requesting that all students start wearing their hats from next week. We wish to ensure that all students are being sun smart and looking themselves. Please make sure that your child has a hat (named so it can be returned to them if lost) in their bag or at school.
Thanks
Thank you to our wonderful Parents’ Association for the lovely Winter Evening Event recently at the Auburn Hotel. It was a great night and a wonderful time to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. Thanks to Necole and our PA team for organising this great night. Thanks also to parents and community members for purchases made via the auction. All funds raised will go towards updating some of the outdoor areas/equipment around the school, including pole crash pads, repairs to football goal posts and sandpit replenishment.
Students are looking forward to the spooky disco next week – which will no doubt be another great event. Thanks to our volunteers who have organised the night and those who are giving up their time to assist at the event. We really appreciate your contributions.
Swimming Program
Thanks to all the staff and parent volunteers who have made our swimming program possible. The junior years have been enjoying the swimming sessions, and the assistance of our parent volunteers has been greatly appreciated. Thank you to those parents/grandparents/carers who have been able to attend and make these sessions run more smoothly.
Warm regards,
Travis
