A Showcase of Talent: Soirees, Rock Performances, and Jazz Workshop Highlights

Soiree’s and Rock Showcase

During week 3, over three nights Tuesday - Thursday, the Music Department held a Concert Band and a String Soiree, along with a Rock Showcase. All three were a huge success with all the brave students who performed either solos or in small groups, performing outstandingly in front of their family and friends.

The Rock Showcase on Thursday night was also a great night with the school rock program bands getting to play at full volume to a very enthusiastic audience. Special mention to Aquila Jarski from year 7 who in his first Rock Showcase requested to perform a solo. He played Master of Puppets by Metallica which the audience loved.

A huge congratulations to all of the students that were involved in performing. They all demonstrated the school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Teamwork to prepare their pieces, arrive on time, play through mistakes and support each other throughout the performances. They can all be very proud of themselves. A big thank you to Ben Muddyman for accompanying students at Tuesday night's Concert Band Soiree and to all the Instrumental staff and Mrs Howes for their support in making the nights such a big success.

Jazz Workshop

On Tuesday 29th October, as part of the Melbourne Jazz Festival's Take Note program, Jazz Flutist, composer and producer, Erica Tucceri and her ensemble, workshopped with our Senior and Junior Jazz Bands.

The Take Note program aims to address the under-representation of women and gender diverse musicians in jazz by celebrating and promoting diverse leaders on stage and to school students across Victoria. Erica introduced  our students to the principals of improvisation in a fun accessible way that the students loved.

One student comment was that she felt comfortable turning up her amp to be heard as she had gained so much confidence through Erica’s direction and encouragement. Both Junior and Senior Jazz bands benefitted so much from this session and really enjoyed seeing a professional Jazz trio perform for them too! Congratulations to all the students for stepping out of their comfort zone and improvising in front of each other. The results were amazing!
