‘Beat The Deck’

We would like to share one of our favourite and most popular card games, ‘Beat The Deck’. Beat the Deck is a simple game to improve number recognition, make predictions and build resilience - to be a humble winner and a gracious loser.

Equipment: 1 deck of cards (52 cards)

Rules:

  1. Create a 3x3 array with 9 cards face value showing - 3 cards in each row.
  2. Each card is worth their face value, a Jack is worth 11, Queen is worth 12, King is worth 13 and an Ace is either 1 or 14.
  3. At the beginning of the game, choose the value of your Ace cards.
  4. Now the fun starts - students choose one card and predict whether the ‘deck’ card will be higher or lower.
  5. If their prediction is correct, the game continues.
  6. If their prediction is incorrect, that pile of cards is turned over and is now out of play.
  7. Continue until all cards have been used from the deck, hence the name - Beat The Deck. Alternatively, if all cards from the array are turned over, the deck wins.
