‘Beat The Deck’
We would like to share one of our favourite and most popular card games, ‘Beat The Deck’. Beat the Deck is a simple game to improve number recognition, make predictions and build resilience - to be a humble winner and a gracious loser.
Equipment: 1 deck of cards (52 cards)
Rules:
- Create a 3x3 array with 9 cards face value showing - 3 cards in each row.
- Each card is worth their face value, a Jack is worth 11, Queen is worth 12, King is worth 13 and an Ace is either 1 or 14.
- At the beginning of the game, choose the value of your Ace cards.
- Now the fun starts - students choose one card and predict whether the ‘deck’ card will be higher or lower.
- If their prediction is correct, the game continues.
- If their prediction is incorrect, that pile of cards is turned over and is now out of play.
- Continue until all cards have been used from the deck, hence the name - Beat The Deck. Alternatively, if all cards from the array are turned over, the deck wins.
