Information and Reminders

iPad Reminders

• Our iPad program works best when all students who have their own iPad bring it to school each day. Please remind your child to pack their iPad in their school bag every morning.
• If you are sending an iPad to school for setup, this can only be completed on Wednesdays, as this is the day our IT technician is on site.

Curriculum

Phonics and reading 

We are completing reviews of short U (as in just) as well as  a mixed review of A, O and I. 

Our learning focus will include:

• Reviewing the phonemes (sounds), cued articulation and graphemes (written letters)
• Identifying where we might see each letter in a word
• Reading and writing 3, 4 and 5 letter words

What can you do at home?

• Support your child to read the decodable book in their Reading Pocket. Try and aim to read every day, if you can.

• The 'Roll and Read' page is a great way to practise sounding out and blending words, especially for students who find reading sentences a little challenging.

•Review the letter names and sounds for A, O, I and U as well as the sounds we have learned so far using the cards below. When practising, say them like this: “A spells /a/.” Ask your child if they can show you the cued articulation for the sounds. 

•Learn the Heart Words (in red booklet). A new page was added just before the holidays. 

• Work through the optional UFLI pages.

Literature: reading responses and writing 

Our mentor texts are two engaging non-fiction books about the Pygmy Blue Whale and Bats. As they explore these Australian animals, students will create 'Can, Have, Are' charts to organise their ideas, learn to distinguish between facts, faction and opinion, and use their new knowledge to write short information texts about the animals.

In Writing, students are continuing to use their Sky, Grass, Ground books to support correct letter size, placement and handwriting development. This week, we are focusing on some of the 'Boss L' letters - l, t, i, k, and b - practising their correct formation along with the appropriate entry and exit points.

Students are continuing to build their confidence and stamina for independent writing. Alongside dictated writing, they will write during mentor text sessions, creating short information texts.

What can you do at home?

•Practice letter formation of some of the 'boss L' letters - l, t, i, k, and b.

•Write some 3, 4 or 5 letter words. Students now know every letter and sound of the alphabet!

•Help your child practise writing their name with a capital letter at the beginning and lowercase letters for the rest of their name.

Maths 

We are wrapping up our unit on addition and subtraction. Students will identify the difference between two numbers within 10 by counting on, and use number lines to find differences, count totals and solve subtraction problems. 

What can you do at home?

•Use a number line at home to practise counting on and counting back within 10. Ask questions like, "If you're on 4 and move 3 spaces forward, where do you land?" or "Start at 8 and jump back 2."

•Create simple addition and subtraction stories using everyday objects such as toys, snacks or blocks (eg. "There are 7 blocks. I take away 3. How many are left?").

CBL

As well as learning about Australian animals during our mentor text sessions, students will use the information they gather to begin completing a ‘sorting chart’ (a chart that helps organise information). They will use this chart to compare and classify animals, noticing similarities, differences and patterns in what they discover.

Wellbeing

SWPBS

Our focus is Be Safe (Transitions). This means:

• Move safely and calmly between learning spaces.
• Be in your class line by the end of the second bell.

Respectful Relationships

In the lesson, Can Everyone Play?, students will explore how to include others in play by recognising different strengths and abilities. They will discuss and practise ways to solve problems fairly so that everyone feels included and able to participate.

Cyber Safety

In the lesson, Warning Signs, students will learn to recognise the warning signs their bodies may give them when something online doesn't feel safe. They will discuss how to use their strengths to make safe choices and know when to seek help from a trusted adult.
