Level 5 & 6

Welcome to Week 3!
Literacy
Reading
This week, students will continue engaging with our mentor text 'Wonder,' deepening their understanding of key events in the novel and learning more about the main character, August Pullman. In preparation for our Literature Circles, students will continue developing their discussion skills by exploring the roles of Word Wizard and Character Captain, encouraging them to investigate interesting vocabulary and analyse characters in greater depth.
Writing
Last week, students curated five images of a special place to inspire their emulated Mallee Sky writing task. Students will continue exploring the connections between the five senses and their chosen images, transforming their ideas into descriptive sentences using the figurative language techniques we have been learning, including similes, metaphors and personification.
Phormes
This week, students will continue investigating the complex base word "form" as part of the PhOrMeS spelling program. Students will explore how this base word contributes to the meaning of a range of words and deepen their understanding of morphology and vocabulary development.
What you can do at home:
- Encourage your child to share an interesting word they discovered as the Word Wizard and discuss its meaning or use it in conversation.
- Challenge your child to describe a favourite place using all five senses and include a simile, metaphor or personification.
- Ask your child to identify words that contain the base word form (e.g. transform, formation, uniform, information) and discuss how the base word helps determine each word's meaning.
Maths
This week, our Grade 5 students begin their unit on angles, where they will identify and compare acute, right and obtuse angles. They will also explore the relationship between angles and 2D shapes, building their understanding of how angles help define different shapes.
Our Grade 6 students also begin their angles unit, investigating complementary and supplementary angles, angles at a point and vertically opposite angles. Through a range of hands-on learning experiences and the use of protractors, students will develop their confidence in identifying, measuring and reasoning about angles.
What you can do at home:
- Look for angles around the home and identify whether they are acute, right or obtuse.
- Ask your child to explain how they know two angles are complementary or supplementary.
- Provide opportunities for your child to use a ruler or protractor to measure angles in everyday objects.
CBL
Big Idea: How can we use our power to create positive change globally?
Guiding Questions:
- What is economic power?
- What makes a business successful?
- How can we use resources responsibly?
How can people use their ideas, skills and resources to improve the world around them?
Challenge:Create a small business, social enterprise or circular economy initiative that generates a profit for good.
Wellbeing
This week, our Respectful Relationships focus continues with an exploration of stress and positive wellbeing. Students will investigate strategies for 'lifting the mood', learning practical ways to recognise when they or others may be feeling stressed and how positive actions, healthy habits and supportive relationships can help improve wellbeing.
What you can do at home:
- Talk with your child about what helps them feel calm or happy when they are feeling stressed.
- Encourage your child to practise one "mood-lifting" strategy each day, such as spending time outdoors, exercising, listening to music or talking with a trusted adult.
- Model positive coping strategies and discuss how everyone experiences stress differently.
