Art

Hi everyone! My name is Hollie Jones & I am thrilled to be teaching Visual Arts at St Mary's.
It has been a busy fortnight in Visual Arts!
All classes have begun a new unit "We can Weave".
F/1 Cool and Warm Colour Paper Weaving
The students started out creating their own warm and cool coloured paper last week. This week they were able to follow the procedure of ruling and cutting their paper into strips and use a plain Over/Under weaving pattern. It was very fiddly but the children persisted through!
This class is such a friendly and caring bunch. Everyone helped each other if things got a bit tricky and it was so great to see the genuine care these students have for their art and each other.
2/3/4 Complementary Colour Magazine Weaving & Experimenting with Various Warp Cuts
Last week the students worked with magazine pages and focused on using complementary colours that would stand out against each other.
This week was all about the warp lines. We used straight, wavy and even zigzag lines to see how each line changed our weave. We used black paper for our loom and used bright paper strips as our weft.
5/6 Creating our own Looms & Learning Various Weave Patterns
Last week the students created their own cardboard looms. They used white string to create the warp. this week they got to start adding their yarn and wool. Most students stuck with the over/under Tabby or plain stitch, however there were a few brave children that attempted the more complex patterns and varied the size of their weft threads.
Weaving is a challenging process to begin with, but luckily very forgiving. Well done to everyone that saw mistakes, undid them and tried again.
