STEM First Nations Excursion

Last week, Lisa Thomas and Christy Thomas took a group of First Nations students to Curtin University for a day filled with learning, discovery, and fun. Students participated in a deadly coding workshop, where they learned how technology can support sustainable agricultural practices and solve real-world challenges.

They also explored a vegetation project focused on nature corridors and ways to help our native wildlife move safely through urban areas. These hands-on experiences encouraged students to think about how science and innovation can create positive environmental outcomes.

One of the highlights was experiencing university life firsthand by sitting in Curtin's lecture theatre, just like university students. There was also plenty of excitement as students spun the prize wheel and won a variety of prizes.

The day provided students with valuable information about future pathways, including opportunities in Aboriginal Studies and other university programs. It was an inspiring experience that opened students' eyes to the many possibilities available through higher education.

A Party to Die For

After months of rehearsals, planning, dancing, designing, building and plenty of behind-the-scenes work, Salvado Catholic College’s 2026 musical, A Party to Die For, finally hit the stage on Thursday 6 and Friday 7 August.

The original murder mystery musical invited audiences to Annie Blackwood’s glamorous “Death to My 20s” birthday party; a celebration filled with suspicious guests, hidden motives, unexpected twists, plenty of laughs, and of course, a murder to solve!

Our cast and dancers did an incredible job bringing the story to life, supported by our backstage and technical crew who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. From acting and choreography to costumes, props, set, lighting, sound and special effects, the production was a huge team effort.

A special thank you must also go to the many staff, families, students and members of our College community who helped along the way. Whether you helped source a prop, alter a costume, paint a set piece, organise equipment, supervise rehearsals, provide food, lend a hand backstage or simply encouraged our students, your support helped make the production possible.

Most importantly, congratulations to our wonderful students. Putting on a show requires courage, commitment, teamwork and a willingness to keep going when things don’t quite go to plan. Watching you step onto the stage and perform for two fantastic audiences was something to be incredibly proud of.

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported A Party to Die For. We hope you enjoyed trying to solve the mystery as much as we enjoyed bringing it to life!

In Your Head - by Zero2Hero

On Tuesday 18th August, several students and I, who are part of the Wellbeing Committee, attended In Your Head, a youth mental health awareness conference run by Zero2Hero. We had the pleasure of listening to personal stories and words of wisdom from four guest speakers, looked around at the many stalls run by mental health and youth-focused organisations and took part in workshops of our own choosing.

The day was packed with information, however, it still felt light and enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the hip-hop dance workshop and the powerful story shared by Melissa Wu, an Olympic medallist for diving, who shared her journey about self-talk and mental health struggles.

Overall, the day felt very well organised and inclusive, and it was a very fun, enjoyable experience.

National Science Week at Salvado Catholic College

National Science Week provided students across Salvado Catholic College with exciting opportunities to explore, investigate and engage with science through a range of hands-on activities.

Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of experiments and investigations, including the ever-popular Elephant's Toothpaste demonstration, Dry Ice experiments, Balloon Bottle investigations, and Seed Ball making activities that highlighted the connection between science and sustainability.

A particular highlight was the collaboration between our Primary and Secondary students, who came together to explore the fascinating properties of Dry Ice. These shared experiences fostered curiosity, teamwork and a love of learning across year levels.

Science Week was a wonderful celebration of inquiry, discovery and creativity, with students enthusiastically embracing opportunities to think critically, ask questions and experience science in action. Thank you to all staff and students who contributed to making the week such a memorable and engaging success.
