Stronger Together: The Importance of Collaborative Partnerships Between Schools and Parents/Carers

A child's education is most successful when schools and families work as partners. Teachers bring professional expertise and educational experience, while parents and carers provide invaluable knowledge of their child's strengths, interests, challenges and aspirations. When these perspectives come together, students benefit academically, socially and emotionally.

Research consistently demonstrates that positive partnerships between schools and families contribute significantly to improved student outcomes. The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) reports that decades of research show parental engagement in learning is associated with higher academic achievement, improved wellbeing and stronger engagement with school.

Australia's Family-School Partnerships Framework recognises that parents and families are the "first and continuing educators of their children" and highlights the important role schools play in fostering meaningful collaboration with families. The Framework states that effective partnerships support student learning and wellbeing by bringing together the resources, knowledge and strengths of families, schools and communities.

The benefits are supported by substantial Australian data. A Queensland Department of Education survey involving more than 96,000 parents and 50,000 school staff found:

89% of parents felt supported by schools to help their child learn
93% of parents reported they could talk to their child's teachers about concerns
81% of parents believed their opinions were taken seriously
92% of staff agreed that parents were encouraged to be active partners in educating their children.

These findings illustrate the powerful impact of positive communication and collaboration between schools and families.

Australian educational leaders have long championed the importance of family engagement.

Professor John Hattie, whose research has influenced educational practice across Australia and internationally, emphasises: "Parents need to hold high expectations and engage in learning conversations with their children."

His research highlights that parental expectations and involvement in learning can have a significant positive influence on student achievement.

AITSL Chief Executive Officer Mark Grant has also reinforced the importance of strong parent engagement, noting that meaningful relationships between families and educators help create the conditions for student success through trust, communication and shared responsibility for learning.

The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) similarly emphasises that:

"Establishing and maintaining trusting and respectful partnerships with families can reinforce effective teaching and have a positive impact on student learning."

Effective school-family partnerships are built on:

Mutual trust and respect
Open, honest and regular communication
Shared goals focused on student success
Recognition and celebration of family diversity
Opportunities for meaningful family participation in school life

Importantly, collaboration does not only occur during parent-teacher conferences or school events. Some of the most influential learning conversations happen at home, whether discussing a school assignment, reading together, encouraging curiosity, or celebrating achievements.

When parents and carers show interest in learning, students are more likely to develop confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards education. Schools that value family voice and encourage two-way communication create environments where children feel supported by a united team of caring adults.
