Women Inspiring the Next Generation (WING)

St Monica’s College students from Years 10–12 were invited to attend the “Women Inspiring the Next Generation” event, hosted at the Novotel Melbourne Airport on Monday, 17 August.

The event provided students with an exciting opportunity to explore the diverse career pathways available across the aviation, airport operations and construction industries, while connecting with industry professionals and gaining valuable hands-on experience.

Workshop 1 gave students the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities with Airport Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (AARF), Qantas, and the Australian Federal Police. Students explored the range of careers, skills and responsibilities involved in airport operations and the broader aviation industry.

Workshop 2 involved a visit to the Naarm Way construction site, where students participated in activities showcasing careers in digital engineering and safety. Students also toured the new drop-off and pick-up facility, providing firsthand insight into the scale and complexity of a major infrastructure project and the diverse career pathways available within construction and project delivery.

Over lunch, students had the opportunity to meet with female industry professionals, who shared their career journeys, experiences and insights into working at Melbourne Airport. Events such as this provide valuable opportunities for students to learn directly from industry professionals and see the many possibilities available to them.

The event highlighted that careers in aviation, engineering and construction extend far beyond the roles students may traditionally associate with these industries, with opportunities across engineering, technology, safety, emergency services, customer service, transport, construction and management.
