Grade 2

Reading
In Reading, we have been studying the poem HIST! by C.J. Dennis. Students have enjoyed uncovering the poem’s rich vocabulary and descriptive language, learning how the author uses the five senses to create vivid imagery. We also looked closely at how speech marks are used in the text to show dialogue, helping us make connections between reading and writing.
Writing
In Writing, students have been exploring narrative writing, with a focus on developing a clear story structure that includes a beginning, middle and end. We have been learning how to use dialogue effectively to bring characters to life, using speech marks correctly. Students have also been introduced to editing techniques to improve their writing by checking for punctuation, spelling, and ways to make their stories more engaging for the reader.
Mathematics
Our Maths lessons have covered two exciting topics. In Location, students have been creating and interpreting maps, identifying features, and giving directions to move from one place to another. They also had the opportunity to draw bird’s-eye views of familiar rooms to understand spatial awareness and perspective. We have also been working on Data Collection, where students learned to create column, bar, and picture graphs. They gathered and compared data sets, discussed what their graphs showed, and began to evaluate their findings to draw conclusions.
Integrated Studies
In our Integrated unit, we have been learning about First Nations Australians and their unique ways of communicating through symbols and stories. Students explored how these symbols were used to pass on important knowledge and cultural traditions. We also investigated how First Nations Australians found and used bush tucker, learning about the deep understanding they have of the land and environment.
