The magic of potions

There is something truly captivating about water, colour, and sensory play, and today the children enjoyed a rich three-in-one experience outdoors as we created magic potions.

Using a range of handy tools from the dirt kitchen, the children began by collecting water in a pail, which was rinsed to ensure the water was clear. Two drops of purple colouring were added and as the water was stirred, everyone observed the transformation from clear to coloured. It looked darkish, so a child immersed her hand into the water and confidently announced, “It’s purple!”

Cornflour was then added—instantly transforming the mixture into a beautiful, creamy purple. The children excitedly renamed it “purple potion,” referring to the cornflour as “magic powder.” Leaves and tiny purple flowers were added next, and the children eagerly stirred, scooped, and poured the potion into small containers.

The play continued after morning tea, with three different potions created—purple, blue-green, and red. As the children stirred, scooped, and poured once again, their curiosity naturally led to colour mixing. They resourcefully collected individual containers for their own experiments, beginning with one colour, then two, and finally three, eagerly observing how each combination changed their potion.

This was a wonderful learning experience in which the children observed a demonstration and then confidently applied their knowledge to independent experiments, exploring cause and effect through hands-on discovery.
