YEAR 3/4 CULTURE EXPO

The focus on intercultural experiences and the role of cultural traditions in shaping personal, group, and national identities is a meaningful way for students to gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. It's great to see how the unit integrated different aspects of the curriculum, including history, geography, respectful relationships, and intercultural capability, showing a holistic approach to education.

Acknowledging and celebrating multiculturalism is important in fostering a sense of inclusivity and understanding among students. Events like these not only educate the students but also bring families and the school community together. It's wonderful to hear that families attended the expo to support their children's learning journey.

Congratulations to the students and everyone involved in making this Cultural Expo a success! Such experiences contribute significantly to students' overall development and cultural awareness.

NAPLAN RESULTS IMPROVEMENT UPDATES

We have numerous reasons to applaud the accomplishments of our Year 3 and Year 5 students. The state results have recently been unveiled, providing us with a valuable benchmark. As we reflect on these results, we acknowledge the importance of enhancing our students' proficiency in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. In response, we are actively devising strategies to address these areas promptly.

One noteworthy initiative is our ongoing assessment of all Year 1 and Year 2 students using the South Australian Phonics Test. This assessment will provide valuable insights into their phonics skills, enabling us to tailor our instruction accordingly.

Furthermore, we are fortunate to have a dedicated parent who is affiliated with the Literacy Hub, granting us access to a wealth of professional literature and resources related to Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) for both reading and spelling. This invaluable resource will significantly bolster our efforts to improve literacy skills among our students.

As we continue to work tirelessly to enhance the educational experience for our students, we are committed to ensuring that they receive the best possible support in these critical areas. We are excited about the positive impact these initiatives will have on our students' academic journey.

SPORTING IN SCHOOLS GRANT - YEAR 3/4 TAEKWONDO CLASSES

In addition to their regular curriculum, our young learners have had the unique opportunity to experience Taekwondo lessons as part of the Sporting in Schools funding. This enriching experience has brought a new dimension to their education, instilling values of discipline, respect, and self-confidence while promoting physical fitness and mental well-being.

Taekwondo is more than just a martial art; it is a way of life. Our students have been exposed to this ancient Korean discipline, which has its roots in teaching both physical and mental strength. The lessons they have received go beyond the physical aspects of kicking and punching; they encompass a holistic approach to personal development.

Taekwondo has helped our students improve their physical fitness levels significantly. Through practice, they have enhanced their agility, balance, flexibility, and strength. The controlled movements and techniques not only help in improving cardiovascular health but also in building endurance and stamina.

One of the most valuable aspects of Taekwondo is the mental discipline it fosters. Our students are learning the importance of focus, concentration, and self-control.

DUNK TANK FOR MND

The Dunk Tank event was undoubtedly an ambitious undertaking, and we must commend our House Captains for their unwavering commitment to this noble cause. The conditions on that day were nothing short of freezing, and yet, they displayed incredible courage as they braved the icy water time and time again, all in the name of raising funds for a crucial cause.

Nearly every family within our school generously contributed to the cause, emphasising the compassion and empathy that define our school community. Parents took time out of their busy schedules to join us at lunchtime and participate in the event. The cheers and laughter that filled the air made last Friday a memorable day for everyone.

It was heartwarming to witness the satisfaction and joy on the faces of our students, staff, and families as they watched our House Captains being submerged. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ms Oliver-Cook for her unwavering support of our House Captains throughout the entire day. Her guidance and encouragement played a vital role in making this event the success that it was.

Thank you to the House Captains for their outstanding leadership, dedication, and selflessness in organising this event. They have demonstrated the true essence of social service and community spirit. Together, they have made a significant contribution to MND research, and we can be proud of the positive impact they have had on those affected by this devastating disease.

2023 SCHOOL SUSTAINABILITY FESTIVAL

The School Sustainability Festival is an annual event organised by the Port Phillip EcoCentre to provide local schools and their communities an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge their environmental and student leadership achievements within City of Port Phillip, Bayside City Council, City of Stonnington and City of Glen Eira.

Now in its 18th year, the School Sustainability Festival is Victoria’s longest running school sustainability festival celebrating and empowering student leadership for our environment.

For our students, attending the festival was more than just an event; it was a step towards a greener, more sustainable future. With an array of activities, workshops, and exhibits centred around sustainability and environmental awareness, the festival provided the perfect platform for our students to engage, learn, and share their passion for a cleaner and healthier planet.

The Sustainability Festival was a reminder that sustainability is not a distant goal but a journey that begins with individual choices and collective efforts. Our students, with their passion and commitment, are leading the way towards a brighter, greener tomorrow.

CELEBRATING OUR YOUNG WRITERS - A DIFFERENT PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE

Our lives are filled with nostalgia and in the past, a visit to the principal's office was dreaded and typically associated with disciplinary actions or reprimands. However, times have changed, and so have our school's values.

We now actively encourage our students to visit our offices, not as a consequence of their actions but as an opportunity to seek help, resolve social conflicts, and engage in restorative conversations.

Our goal is to create a safe and nurturing environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and seeking assistance when needed. One of the most significant changes in our approach to the 'principal's office' is the emphasis on celebrating the learning journey of our students.

Last week, our Foundation students provided us with an excellent example of this transformation. We celebrated their incredible writing skills. These aspiring little writers shared their lived experiences through their written words, accompanied by vibrant illustrations and fabulous structural compositions. Their faces radiated with pride as they recounted their achievements.

The celebration of our Foundation students' writing skills was not just about acknowledging their talent but also recognising the effort and dedication they put into their work. It highlighted our commitment to fostering a positive school culture where every achievement, no matter how small, is cherished and applauded.

Our school's commitment to celebrating student achievements extends beyond academics. We recognise and celebrate their growth in sports, arts, leadership, and community involvement.

The principal's office has become a hub for acknowledging the diverse talents and accomplishments of our students. Moreover, we believe in the power of restorative conversations. Instead of focusing solely on punitive measures, we use these conversations as opportunities for personal growth and conflict resolution. Our students learn the value of empathy, communication, and understanding, which are essential life skills that will serve them well beyond their school years.

We will continue to encourage our students to share their stories, talents, and dreams, knowing that our offices are places where their voices are heard, their achievements are celebrated, and their growth is nurtured.

THE STORK IS FLYING BY ONCE AGAIN AT RPS

We have some heartwarming news to share with all of you, and it's sure to bring a smile to your faces.

Ms Clover is expecting a baby! She and her family are over the moon with joy and anticipation as they embark on this wonderful journey towards parenthood once again.

Not only is Ms Clover expecting a baby, but her son, Ollie, is also incredibly thrilled to be taking on a new role in the family – that of a big brother!

Please join us in congratulating Ms Clover and her family on this joyous occasion! We wish them all the happiness and love in the world as they prepare to welcome their newest family member due in January.

CONGRATULATIONS

Asha K and Iris B both play for the U11 girl's team at St Kilda City Junior Football Club (coached by Iris's dad Tom), and a couple of weeks ago, they won the culminating event of the season, the Lightning Carnival, undefeated.

This win capped off a stellar season in which they won 13 of their 15 games. Club football is almost over for another year but for any Ripper girls out there thinking about picking up a footy in 2024, let Asha and Iris be your inspiration!

COMMUNITY SUPPORT - LOCAL FOOD DRIVE

It's a testament to the compassion and solidarity of our community that we were able to come together and support a local food drive.

Acts of generosity like this can have a profound impact on individuals and families who rely on such assistance. It's a wonderful example of how communities can unite to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

From Sophie's family - Kindly be advised that all items donated have been successfully dropped off at the community centre today (Friday 25th Aug 2023). We cannot express enough of our gratitude towards the Ripponlea Primary School family enabling for this initiative to be such a success.

It's great to see that students at Ripponlea enjoy using flexible furniture options in their classrooms! Flexible seating can provide a more dynamic and comfortable learning environment, which can be beneficial for students' engagement and productivity.

Thanks to our families who generously contribute to classroom resources to make these purchases possible. Having a variety of seating options like wobbly chairs, couches, bench seating, and more can cater to different learning styles and preferences, allowing students to choose the seating arrangement that suits them best for a particular task or lesson.

This flexibility can contribute to a more interactive and adaptable classroom, fostering creativity and collaboration among students. Continuing to prioritize the needs and preferences of the students and involving the community in supporting these initiatives can go a long way in creating a positive and effective learning environment at Ripponlea.
