STATE CROSS COUNTRY

On Thursday the 18th of July, our state cross country trip made the journey back to Yarra Glen Racecourse. Last time we were there for EMR the course was in pristine condition, the same could not be said this time round as it was the largest mud pit in the southern hemisphere after the torrential downpour days prior.

All students should be congratulated on the fantastic achievement that is simply qualifying for the state championships. It is incredibly difficult to do, and to have so many competitors is a testament to all of your hard work.

U14G 3km race: Alex R 25th, time 14:25, Phoebe M 63rd, time 15:49, Annika L 71st, time 15:59 & Amelia K 99th, time 18:03.

U16G 3km race: Leana B 41st, time 15:56

U16B 5km race: Robbie P 17th, time 19:02 & Lucas H 37th, time 20:00

U17-20B 5km race: Will G 39th, time 19:48 & Finn M 40th, time 19:48

U17-20G 3km race: Sunday D 43rd, time 16:04

Special shoutout to Finn of year 12 who has run his final cross-country race for Vermont Secondary College. Your commitment and dedication over the years has been second to none. Next up, track season!

Once again, well done to all involved. The best part about track season is that there’s no mud!

ALL SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

A couple of days after state cross country, the Victorian All Schools XC competition was held on Saturday at Bundoora Park. Robbie P, Will G laced back up again, and year 8 student Jack F took to the course.

The All-Schools competition is a qualifying event for the national competition which is being held in Tasmania next month.

Results from the day:

U17B 6km race: Robbie P placed 40th with a time of 21:58

U18B 6km race: Will G placed 40th with a time of 23:23

U15B 4km race: Jack F placed 26th with a time of 15:09

Well done to Robbie, Will and Jack for representing VSC at another All-Schools event. It is fantastic to see these students challenge themselves against athletes from all competitive backgrounds!

Senior Girls Australian Rules

The senior girls football team had a competitive day out on Monday the 22nd of July. We toughed out the day with 18 players.

Game 1 saw us take on Heathmont College. Jemma K was a force to be reckoned with, providing immense pressure around the ground. It was a tight contest at half time with scores locked at 0-0. A half time rev up saw the team pile on goal after goal on the scoreboard running out eventual winners 44-0. Our best players for game 1 were Taya, Jemma and Jess D.

Game 2 saw us take on Lilydale. We were battling the wind and the oppositions physicality; we held up okay at the halftime break. Down by 3 goals but not out. An unfortunate injury to Jess D meant that we only had 17 on the field and lost some experience and leadership around the ground. The team did well to try and thwart Lilydale’s subsequent attacks, but we were unable to convert on the scoreboard.

Game 3 was against Canterbury Girls who had the largest team of the day with at least 22 available players. We were against relentless in our contest and were able to get the ball forward on occasion but just lacked that final killer kick inside 50 to make a mark on the scoreboard. In the first half injury struck us again with tackle beast Erin J having to leave the field. This had us down to 16 players. We did what we could, the team never gave up and should be so proud of themselves.

Well done to all, particularly the year 12 students for their final football round robin representing Vermont Secondary College!

SENIOR ROUND ROBIN

Basketball

Boys/Mixed

On Thursday 18th July the Senior boys’ basketball team competed at Division against our local competitors.

Our first game of the day was against Glen Waverley Secondary College. Vermont put on an outstanding performance and were able to pull away quickly, leading to an 89-17 victory.

Our second game was against Highvale Secondary College. This was a much more competitive game, and the boys were under a bit of pressure. Highvale were able to rattle us, and the boys had to stay composed. We didn’t play our best, however Highvale could not penetrate our full court defence and we came away with a close win 38-31.

Our last game was against Mount Waverley Secondary College, and we knew this was a must win game if we were to advance to the next round. This was probably our best performance as a team, with everyone paying their role as well as backing each other up. It was fast paced with some individual and team brilliance both defensively and offensively. We were able to walk away with a win 44-33 to finish off a great day of competitive basketball.

Congratulations to Avi K, Cooper C, Kade G, Atonio T, Will J, Josh W, Jeth W, Martin O, Haidyn G, Will S and Ambrose A on your outstanding performance and best of luck at the next round. Also, a big thank you to our helper on the day Benny L.

Girls

The Vermont Senior Girls were brilliant throughout the basketball tournament last week.

The A team had a fantastic win against Highvale in the first game. Fantastic defensive contributions from across the board, in particular Niamh and Arya protecting the paint against some taller opposition, were then highlighted by some bursts off the bench led by Taya, Sam and Tahlia. In a close game our girls managed the last 5 minutes for a hard-fought win.

After a loss to Glen Waverley in game 2 – they shot the lights out – it all came down to game 3 against Mount Waverley. It was looking like there would be a 3-way tie for first place, so percentage was going to be crucial. Jess led the attack and started scoring freely and the girls were in control from the opening tip. Arwyn had the hustle play of the day in running the full length of the court against two opposition players before rejecting a shot and leading the break the other way.

We won, but not by enough so we did not get through to the next round. 2 out of 3 ain’t bad, though!

The B team had a lot of fun. Considering many of the girls had kindly volunteered to ‘just be the scorer’, there was a little concern about how we would go on the court. 10 minutes into game 1 and we were up double digits.

Kat and Maddie were determined to hit a 3-pointer, and after just a couple of attempts, they were successful. A huge win in game one gave the girls some confidence. Game 2 against G.W was a reality-check, and the roles were reversed. Game 3 was a really close game against Mount Waverley. Despite having a lot of the play and probably about 50 more shot attempts, we went down by a point.

On Thursday 18th June, Vermont competed against Glen and Mt Waverley and Highvale at Kilsyth Table Tennis Centre.

The boys managed to get together a team and were quickly challenged in game 1 by Mt. Waverley. Down 0-3 (all scored by one player) at halftime, we put a tight tag on and ended up finishing 0-4. We swung some changes for our next game, against Highvale, and were a lot more competitive. We conceded a late goal and couldn’t equalise, ultimately going down 1-2.

For our last game, against Glen Waverley, we ended up drawing 0-0, but had multiple opportunities to score by virtue of some excellent passing. The referees commented on how much our team had improved throughout the day, and that we now looked like a hockey team. With most of the players being in Year 11, I hope they enjoyed themselves enough to play again next year.
