In this day and age we are problem solvers and critical thinkers - we need to understand the positives and negatives of situations, ideas and phenomena so that we can efficiently build a path forward. Many subjects from the Humanities and Commerce fields offer this mentality - but as does participation in the debating program.
What are the other benefits of debating you ask? Well, they include boosting one's, self-confidence, enhancing research skills, forming teamwork and communication, improved public speaking, fosters careful and deliberate listening, and more!
It’s sad that after five big rounds of growing, learning and embodying of school values that the upper years (Year 9 -12) debating competition in the Ringwood Division has come to an end! We were so happy that our Year 9s, the final debate of the night, were victorious against Catholic Ladies College!
Although we bid farewell to marvellous Year 12s, who had a victory in Round 3 against Mt Lilydale Mercy College, we are glad it’s not a full goodbye and Seeya later just yet (exams are just around the corner though…). Early in 2025 our current 9 -11s will regroup and meet again for the 2025 competition - we are always accepting new additions and would love to have you come on board. In the next few weeks, the junior competition will come into play, with three big rounds for the Donvale division, where we have three Year 8 teams competing!
Exciting, meaningful and relevant topics that have been discussed this year have included the Olympics representing athletes rather than countries, changing schooling to a blended format, and the pros and cons of the metro tunnel train project.
Well done to all of our speakers, attendees and supporters of meetings and the debates - all of this wouldn’t have been possible without your contributions, enthusiasm and dedication! We look forward to seeing our existing debaters, and any new additions, later this year and early next year!
