Careers

Hello Parents/Guardians and Community Members,

Term three looks set to be a very busy term in Careers, with our Year 12 students finalising their post school planning and focusing on their final term of school. We have commenced the subject selection process for Year 8, Year 10 and Year 11 with a large group of our Parents & Carers of our Year 10 and Year 11 students attending our Subject Selection Information Night last night. This term we also have many excursions coming up for both Year 9 and Year 10 including industry tours, and the Try A Trade Day in Wagga as well as a visit from the Australian Defence Force in a few weeks.

Tuesday night we held the Subject Selection Parent’s and Carers Information night in the school hall. It was fantastic to see so many parents and carers attend with their child to gain invaluable information about the HSC, NESA and all the many wonderful subjects we have on offer at Narrandera High School. Wednesday, we held further subject information sessions for our students with our Head Teachers and subject teachers providing students with more in-depth focus on each subject.

Subject selection Interviews for Year 10 and Year 11 students are available to book on the parent portal for Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th and Friday 7th August (which is next week) from 3pm-6pm. Any parents who wish to make an appointment outside of these times and dates can call the school office for alternate interview times.

Year 12 University Applications & Open Days

Our Year 12 students who wish to apply for Early Entry programs at various universities are encouraged to come and seek support from the careers office so that they can submit their applications by the set deadlines and ask any questions they may have about adjustment points and evidence required to support their applications.

I would also like to remind Year 12 students and families that many of the university open days have commenced last term and are coming up this term. Students can come and see me for specific dates or go to the university websites and register to attend these events with their family. Open days, give students a chance to seek important information directly from university staff and support programs to assist with their planning for post school tertiary education. It is also a fantastic opportunity to explore the many accommodations available and ask questions about scholarships available for students to assist with the cost of tertiary education.

Year 12 Careers Transition Interviews

Careers Planning and Transition interviews with all our Year 12 students have re-commenced this term and will continue as students’ progress through their final term of schooling. The purpose of this interview is to develop a Career Plan so that students can feel confident in their post school planning and seek guidance on the various pathway options open to students as they transition through the final months of Year 12 to post-school life.  If parents or carers wish to attend these interviews, please call the careers office and we can schedule a time that suits you.

Australian Defence Force Visit

On Wednesday 26th August, we will have a visit from the ADF to discuss careers, gap years and entry pathways into the defence force, as well as students participating in the ADF Personal Training Challenge. This event will be for our Year 10 cohort of students.

Try a Trade & Wagga TAFE Excursion

27th August 2026

We also have another great excursion coming up for our Year 10 cohort to explore all the Trades based careers at the Try a Trade Day in Wagga on 27th August. At this event, many employers across the Riverina will be in attendance with hands on displays and information on all things Trades and Vocational Courses from TAFE and other RTO’s. This is a fantastic showcase of many careers, such as nursing, early childhood education, hairdressing, beauty, electrical, construction, mechanical and many other trades. Notes will come home soon with more details.

Industry Tours with Grow Our Own

Interested students in Years 9 & 10

We are excited to have the opportunity to attend various industry tours with several local employers and explore various industries in our region. Katie Pastro from ‘Grow Our Own’ has worked in partnership with our local employers to provide several industry tours for interested students from our Years 9 & 10 Students.

These are:

  • Narrandera Shire Council – Council Field Day – Local Government Week on 6th August
  • Hutchins Bros Engineering & Bullah Group & TAG Energy – Tour to be held on 18th August
  • Narrandera Hospital and Ambulance Station – Tour to be held 20th August

These tours have been advertised last term and this term, so there may be only one or two spots left for these tours so please come see Mrs Ing this week!

Virtual SAFEWORK White Card Construction Safety Course

 2nd & 3rd September 2026

We have our next White Card Construction Safety course scheduled for the 2nd and 3rd of September in the school library. Students must be in the school library seated ready to commence at 8:45am as this is a requirement of SAFEWORK for the strict requirements of this course. Students will be assessed throughout the two half days and in the afternoon on the knowledge gained of workplace safety and how to respond in an emergency scenario.

I expect this to be the last White Card Course we offer this year as we have provided this opportunity to most of your Year 9-12 students and the next cohort of students in year 8 will not be eligible to sit this training until 2027. I will advise interested students in year 8 to put their name on the waitlist towards the end of the year.

All Careers Events

All these opportunities are always announced to students at our morning assemblies, year meetings and in our newsletters. Any student or parent who has any questions in relation to these activities are welcome to contact the careers office for further information.
