Junior Years

Foundation

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been learning the sounds ‘wh’, ‘th’, and ‘oo’. Students have been practising blending these sounds to read words such as whack, think and moon. In Writing, we have been constructing short, simple sentences based on stories we have listened to in class. Students have been recalling information from imaginative texts.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been learning about sharing and grouping. Students have been practising being able to identify whether a number can be shared equally into two groups.

To accompany this, we have been learning about odd and even numbers.

Religion

In Religion, our focus has been 'Let’s Celebrate Creation'. Students have been exploring all the beauty in God’s creation. We have been creating creatures such as birds, fish and plants using different art techniques.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we have been learning about Visual Arts. Students have explored the importance of colour in artwork and how colours can be used to express different emotions and feelings. We have been investigating a range of visual art techniques and explore how visual art is expressed across different cultures.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

Read a story with someone at home. Talk about what happened at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the story.
Practise writing all your letters using lower case letter formation.
Complete the below:

C) Create your own “groups of” picture. Talk to someone at home about what you have drawn.

4. Think of your own sentence to write. Ensure your sentence starts with a capital letter, has spaces between your words and ends with a full stop.

Year 1 News

Literacy

In Literacy, students have been learning to spell using 'air' and 'are'. We have been practicing the tricky words couldn't, shouldn't and wouldn't.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have been learning about patterns and practising skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. We have now begun our new topic, Sharing and Grouping. Students are learning how to share objects equally into groups.

Religion

In Religion, we have started learning about Creation. We are discovering that God created the world and everything in it. We are also learning how to care for people, animals, and the environment.

Visual Arts

In Visual Arts topic, students have been learning about self-portraits and landscapes and discussing the features of each type of artwork. They created their own self-portrait and landscape using a variety of colours and techniques. Students have enjoyed expressing their creativity while developing their drawing and painting skills.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

Literacy

Find words in your take home reader with the sound 'air and 'are.
Practice putting the tricky words, couldn't, shouldn't and wouldn't into sentences.
Listen to your child read their reader each night.

Year 2 News

Literacy

In Literacy, during spelling, students have been learning about silent letters ‘k’ (know), ‘b’ (lamb) and ‘w’ (wrong). Tricky words we have been focusing on include decided, know and were.

Grammar

During grammar lessons, students have been learning about verbs. In particular students have been focussing on moving verbs such as jumping, swimming, hopping and drinking. They practiced acting out the verbs and described actions in pictures.

Comprehension

During comprehension, students have been learning how to monitor their understanding while reading. They are practising noticing when meaning is unclear and using strategies to help them make sense of the text. To support this, students ask themselves questions before, during and after reading, check that what they are reading makes sense, and reread or use clues from the text to clarify their understanding and maintain comprehension.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have started learning about multiplication through repeated addition, arrays, and groups of objects. They are exploring how equal groups can be represented in different ways and are learning that "groups of" is the same as "multiplied by". For example, 3 groups of 4 is the same as 3 × 4 and can be shown as 4 + 4 + 4. Students are building confidence in using these strategies and representations to develop their understanding of multiplication.

Religion

In Religion, we have been learning about how we can care for creation. We are exploring ways to look after the world by caring for people, animals, and the environment. Students are developing an understanding of how their actions can help protect and respect God's creation.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, our topic is Visual Arts. Students created a portrait of their dad using Posca markers to add colour and detail to their artwork.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

Literacy

Write the tricky words (decided, were, know) using rainbow writing.
Listen to your child read their reader each night. When reading, students could practice using the ‘monitoring’ strategy to retell what the text is about.
