Coach CPD Online Development Sessions

On Tuesday 21st April, Pony Club Victoria hosted a Coach Development CPD Session focused on Planning Safe Progressive Lessons.

A huge thank you to Rachael Edwards for facilitating this session and our Coach Development Officer, Jill Taylor, for hosting.

Thank you to our attendees for engaging with the content and contributing ideas throughout the polls and group discussions on what we can consider as a coach.

We had an incredible turnout of members across the state as well as Pony Club members from NSW & Queensland. Paul Seuren also joined us from China.

Key Takeaways

  • Safety comes first.
  • Teach skills in steps.
  • Apply the Progression Principles.
  • Remember that rider development is individual.
  • Look for real learning, not one-off success.
  • A rider has not fully learned a skill just because they performed it once.
  • Use reflection to strengthen learning.
  • Good coaching is not just about teaching skills. It is about creating safe, confident and progressive learning for both rider and horse.

A safe, effective lesson includes four parts:

1. Warm up

2. Skill development

3. Application

4. Cool down

Progressive coaching is not about perfection. It is about helping each rider move safely and confidently from where they are now to the next achievable step.
