Numeracy

Big Idea Statement:

Comparison: OPERATION MEANINGS & RELATIONSHIPS: The same number sentence (e.g. 12-4 = 8) can be associated with different concrete or real-world situations and different number sentences can be associated with the same concrete or real-world situation.

In Numeracy, the grade 5/6 students have been working extremely hard on Big Idea 5. They are understanding that numbers can be connected to real world situations and have used this knowledge to analyse ‘best buy’ scenarios. The students are able to look at different options and use their understanding of long division to determine what would be the cheapest option. They have also learnt how to figure out different algorithms and used this to solve and continue patterns. It’s been incredible watching the students work hard throughout this semester and we can’t wait to watch them continue to grow over the remainder of the year.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have started our next unit, which is to write a factual recount based on our new mentor text  ‘Us Mob Walawurru.’ The grade 5/6s will be learning about the structure and features of a factual recount and will work independently to create a recount based on ‘Life in Australia before the 1967 Referendum.’ It’s been great to hear the questions and discussions that have come from reading our background knowledge text about the history of Australia.

We can’t wait to read the end results next term!

The sky was huge… hanging low. It gave me a feeling inside that I had never felt before. It was a kind of excitement, like the space inside me was getting bigger, making it harder to breathe.
Central Australia 1960s… Funny, straight-talking Ruby lives on a cattle station and goes to the silver bullet school. When she questions Mr Duncan, her well-meaning teacher, on why their cultures are so at odds with each other, she unintentionally triggers her own awakening. The more Ruby learns, the harder the journey becomes as she is drawn back to country to uncover the secrets of her past.

Integrated Studies

In Integrated Studies, we discussed many different issues that we would like to raise awareness for in our community, such as; cyberbullying, NDIS fraud, vaping, littering, pollution, vandalism and many more. The students formed their political party, based on the issue they would like to research and started to develop their persuasive speech. This speech will be spoken by the leader of their group and will present a convincing argument about why their issue is the most important. At the end of the speeches, the students will independently vote on the issue they think was the most persuading using ballot paper, which we will then count so we can find the majority.

Once the students have selected an issue, they will work collaboratively to raise awareness of this issue by planning a proposal that Mr Ward and Miss Stephan will have to approve. We can’t wait to hear the winning speech and find out what important issue we will be raising awareness for!

Thank you

Just like that we are at the end of Term 2, we honestly can’t believe how fast this year is flying by. It has been amazing watching the friendships form and grow over this semester. The grade 5/6s have worked hard on not only their learning, but on their resilience as well.

Thank you to our wonderful families for your ongoing support throughout the semester, we truly do appreciate all that you do.

Remember, we are off to Canberra for our school camp on August the 10th, which is week 5 of next term!

Please continue to have those conversations with your children about this camp reminding them what an amazing experience this will be!

And again, if you have any questions, concerns or wonderings please reach out to either one of us, we are here to help and make it a little easier for each of the students.

We hope you have an amazing break and spend lots of time together.

We will see you in Term 3!
