Three weeks into the final school term of 2025 and the College has already had a number of pleasing results on the sports field. Well done to the following teams on their success as we head into warmer weather.

Clay Target Shooting

CCS wins the Greg Gonzales Wellington Interschool Shoot!

For the first time in 17 years, Catholic College Sale has claimed overall honours at the Greg Gonzales Wellington Interschool Shoot at Sale Field & Game.

The team of Bill Douthat, Charlie Duncan, Noah Irwin, Sam Reeves and Oliver Witt combined for an impressive 78 out of 100 targets, securing first place in the team event.

There were also strong individual results, with Myles Witt (Year 8) and Charlie Hall (Year 8) finishing in the top three of the Junior Boys category. Myles claimed first after hitting 18/20 targets and winning a shoot-off against a student from Yarram Secondary College.

Our Year 11/12 Senior Boys Cricket team finished third in the state after some outstanding performances this year.

Back in Term 1, the boys advanced to the State Quarter Final at Joe Tabuteau Reserve, Moe. Melbourne High batted first, recovering to 8/110 after being 5/36. Harry Tatterson led the attack with 3/18 (4), supported by Mitch McMaster (2/12) and Nic Walker (1/12).

In reply, Tom Boyd (12) and Jack McQuillen (20 off 14) gave a solid start before Harry blasted 60* off 27 balls, including seven sixes, guiding CCS to a six-wicket win.

On 14 October, CCS travelled to Elgar Park, Mont Albert North, to face Catherine McAuley College Bendigo in the semi-final. Bowling first, Mitch McMaster again impressed with 3/27, though Bendigo reached 5/207. Despite Tom Boyd’s 60 (43), CCS fell short, finishing equal third after Bendigo went on to win the final.

SSV Cricket – Year 7, 8 and 9/10 Teams

Three CCS Cricket teams remain in contention in the School Sport Victoria competition. Our Year 8 and Intermediate Boys (Year 9/10) have advanced to the State Quarter Finals, while the Year 7s will contest the Gippsland Finals on Tuesday 28 October.

Year 8 Team

The team had a brilliant day at the Region Finals on Thursday 16 October, defeating Bairnsdale SC and Bass Coast College to claim Gippsland honours. Shane Bredells starred with 77 off 46 balls, supported by Lachie McMaster (27). With the ball, Dexter “The Destroyer” Dent was outstanding, taking 6/1 from 3.4 overs against Bairnsdale. In the final, Flynn Mahony (3/10) and Sam Duffield (2/9) led the bowling as CCS dismissed Bass Coast for 52, before Harry Bates (30*) and Lachie McMaster (18*) sealed a 10-wicket win. The team now heads to the State Quarter Final on Thursday 20 November.

Year 9/10s Team

In the Gippsland Semi Final against Lowanna College, CCS bowled first and restricted them to 78 all out, with Charlie Kelly (3/16), Pat Horan (2/2) and Mac Pendergast (2/13) sharing the wickets. Mac (22) and Xavier Hurley (23) ensured a comfortable chase. In the final against Nagle College, CCS piled on 2/186, thanks to Josh Duffield (52), Xavier Hurley (47), Mac Pendergast (38*) and Pat Horan (38*). Beau Cottrell (2/6) and Blake Rowley (1/7) helped limit Nagle to 7/89, securing a strong win and a place in the State Quarter Final on Wednesday 5 November.

SSV State Athletics

While inclement weather threatened to spoil the fun for athletes, CCS still managed to have a promising showing at the recent School Sport Victoria State Athletics Finals.

Held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park, the College had 17 students qualify for the event, after strong performances at the Gippsland Finals earlier in the year.

Jack Alcock (12th), Bodi Jordan (8th), Jack Bartlett (13th) and Oliver Sullivan (13th) ran very consistent times in their middle-distance events, coming up against some quality runners. Our 4x100m relay teams also fared well, running very competitive times.

Well done to the following students:

  • 14 Years Boys: Kit Barberio, Rusty Dowsett, Ryder Gieschen & Jack Bartlett
  • 12-13 Girls: Luy Emslie, Ada Phillips, Mia Stewart & Summer Gieschen
  • 16 Years Boys: Phoenix Cox, Jimmy Little, Jack Armstrong & Abdul Hanafi
