Jessie Dennison - Maths Teacher

Why did you decide to become a Teacher?

I always enjoyed helping my friends with their maths work when I was in school, so it just seemed like a natural fit.  I love the variety in this job, getting to work with people constantly, and I love the challenges in maths (and helping students overcome these!)

How long have you been a Teacher?

Officially 16 years, but have had lots of breaks to travel and have my kids.

What was your last place of employment - school/university or another organisation?

 Wantirna College.

What do you love most about being a Teacher?

By far the relationships that I form with my sudents.  Getting to know them throughout the year both academically and personally, and helping them feel proud of their achievements in maths.

What has been one of your best teaching moments?

When I went on maternity leave for my second child, my Year 9 class that I had taught for two years surprised me with a class party (balloons, gifts, food, music - the lot!)  I was so blown away by their thoughtfulness - there were a lot of tears shed that day.  I still keep in contact with many of those past-students now, and it's so nice to see where their lives have taken them.

What would be 3 things that you would like the students to know about you?

  • I love baking (especially cupcakes)
  • I am always happy to chat about celebrity gossip
  • I am approachable and understanding - it can take a while for students to feel comfortable with their teachers, but I aim to make my classrooms a safe, nurturing place where these positive relationships are formed as quickly as possible.

Where is your favourite holiday destination?

Phillip Island (or anywhere with a beach!)

What TV show/series did you last binge watch?

House of Guinness - such a cliffhanger, I need Season 2 immediately!!!

If you could wear Harry’s invisibility cloak for one day, where would you go and what would you do?   That’s Harry Potter’s cloak not Harry Ruff’s cloak 😊

I would love to see a day in the life of Taylor Swift, especially if she is spending some time in the kitchen doing some baking, and preferably at her Rhode Island mansion!

What is the one piece of ‘advice’ or the one thing that you always say to your students?

Set goals.  Whether short term or long term, have something to work towards.  And make lists to help get you there!
