2023 Wrap Up

2023 Wrap Up

It has been another wonderful year for the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the students at St Norbert College. Filled with many events and opportunities for all to enjoy, there was never a dull moment. A handful of events that were attended by members of the SRC this term include the Year 10 River Cruise, the Year 9 Careers Day, the Climate Canons Sea Shepherd Marine Debris Clean Up, the Year 7 Maths Incursion, the Specialised Basketball and Football Excursions, the Year 8 Retreat, the Year 9 Italian Excursion and the Year 7 (2024) Orientation Day.

To conclude the year, we'd like to share the following thoughts from members of the SRC that attended these events:

Year 10 River Cruise

On Tuesday, 28 November, our Year 10 students danced the night away on their River Cruise. As we sailed along the Swan River, we took in the beautiful city views as the sun set peacefully in the distance. They then danced with great enthusiasm and filled their stomachs with pizza, soft drinks and doughnuts. Students really enjoyed a night of fun, before setting off on their Christian Service Learning and Work Experience adventures. Thank you to the staff and students involved in organising the event.

Year 9 Careers Day

Ready to explore their future careers and pathways, the Year 9 students went to Curtin University. They got to experience what it would be like studying at a University campus and finding their dream occupation. They saw the many facilities Curtin University has to offer including a professional lab, a seven-story library and eccentric clothing designs. One memorable activity that most Year 9 students did was the 'Race Around the Campus'. It was an exciting way to get familiar with the University and the many classes they have to offer. Please see the Careers and VET page for photos from the day.

Climate Canons Sea Shepherd Marine Debris Clean Up

Our time at Port Beach was extremely educational, thanks to Carolina and Lisa from Sea Shepherd. We were given the opportunity to travel to Port Beach, Fremantle to clean up a section of the coast. We filled up around 8 bags of rubbish that would've otherwise ended up in the ocean. We were then able to sort the rubbish into different categories, learning about how companies may advertise something as recyclable but that not being the whole truth. Carolina spoke about how the rubbish may need certain processes to break down or how the plastic is too thing to be recyclable. The main topic of our excursion was biodegradable materials and the harm that is being done to sea life. I enjoyed learning about the different types of rubbish and how it ends up by, or in, the ocean, despite being dropped many kilometers away from the ocean. Please see the Climate Canons page for photos from the day.

Year 7 Maths Incursion

I had a lot of fun in my group with my classmates, but it was also quite challenging. My personal favourite challenge was the frog one, called 'Let Me Pass', and the hardest in my opinion was the chain one, called 'Prison Break'. I would be pleased to try this whole experience again.

Year 9 Italian Excursion

The Year 9 Italian students were given the opportunity to take a bus to Fremantle, learning about how people, especially Italians, came to Western Australia on boats. They answered questions and walked around Fremantle looking at the incredible architecture. The students were able to go to an Italian restaurant, for a two course meal. After they had their lunch, they were lucky enough to go to a Gelateria (ice-cream shop) to cool down and relax while waiting for their bus to arrive. Please see the Languages page for photos from the day.

Year 9 Textiles Excursion

The Year 9 Textiles students learnt about sustainable clothing and how their choices can affect others who need it more. They visited second hand clothing shops, such as the Good Sammy's and had the opportunity to buy 'vintage' style clothing. Please see the Technologies page for photos from the day.

Year 8 Retreat

On Wednesday, 15 November, the Year 8 students attended a YMT-organised retreat exploring the theme, 'Who is God for me'. The event included discussions, plays, and games that provided insights into God's purpose for us. We engaged in group sessions with YMT leaders, learning from their experiences. The retreat highlighted the importance of unity despite differences, featuring leaders sharing personal hardships and exploring parables to understand God better. We appreciate the opportunity and thank the YMT leaders and teachers.

Year 7 (2024) Orientation Day

On Wednesday, 29 November, the SRC welcomed and guided the incoming Year 7 students and their parents. The SRC also arranged several lunchtime activities to ensure that the students felt welcomed at the College. We would like to share some feedback from students that attended the Orientation Day:

It was fun meeting new people and I enjoyed doing all the activities the College provided - Ethan Pang (Year 7, 2024)

I found out that I was in Kilnacrott at Orientation Day which I was happy about because not only was I with a lot of my friends, but it’s also been the winning House for 4 years. Kilnacrott got split into 2 groups for the day and I found out I was doing dance and chemistry. Dance and chemistry were both fun and interesting and both teachers seemed really kind. At the end of the day, we listened to people perform and they were talented. Orientation Day made me feel so welcomed and the atmosphere always felt warm - Chelsea Perez (Year 7, 2024)

We hope that the incoming Year 7 students enjoyed the exciting activities and are looking forward to becoming a part of the College community next year. Please see the Head of Year 7 page for photos from the day.

Azeriah Borja

(Year 9)

As always, we welcomed new members to the SRC this year. We asked a couple of them for their thoughts:

At first, I was nervous committing to the SRC as I kept asking Jaden what to do and what was happening but as I got introduced to the basics of how the meetings go and the fact that I was surrounded by my friends, I felt more comfortable to commit and participate and it started to be a lot of fun - Kirsten Dela Cruz (Year 9)

I was very overwhelmed and nervous when filling out the forms for SRC as I thought that it was too many commitments to make or that maybe I will not fit in. But when being welcomed and introduced to the SRC during my first ever meeting, I learnt that getting along with other students and fitting in was not a problem as there were many opportunities to talk to older or younger students and relate to similar interests. The commitments were fun to make whether it be by yourself or with others, but either way it wasn’t as much as I expected it to be - Azeriah Borja (Year 9)

On behalf of the SRC, I would like to thank all the students for their effort and willingness to take part in these experiences and the teachers who organised and attended these excursions. A special shout out to Miss Pisconeri for the Climate Canons excursion, Ms Gonsalves for the careers day, Ms Villarosa for the Italian excursion and the Heath and Physical Education Department for the sport excursions. I would also like to thank Mrs Silva, Ms Fuda, Ms Gonsalves and Ms Smith for all their efforts with the SRC this year and the work they do to ensure that we, the students, enjoy our learning. Merry Christmas!
